    Hello All,

New member here to the Tacoma forum but not to Toyota at all! Me and my wife have 4runners, i have a 3rd gen and she has a 4th gen. With a family 5th gen haha.

Due to recent job changes i am going to need a truck, which excites me a ton cause i love the 3rd gen tacoma look! I am not looking to buy new but have found a local SR5 that is decently priced I feel like. (Link below)

    https://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/d/2016-toyota-tacoma-double-cab/6683574143.html

Questions, what the main difference in SR5 and the Off road. Since i will be lifiting it 3" in the future no need for a TRD pro since i will rip the suspension out. I dont care about leather and lockers, I have a family with 2 boys and we play outside a lot. We love to play in the mud but nothing requiring lockers and such, I also plan to just move my 265/70/16 Wildpeaks (love these tires as they are on all our rigs) wheels from my 3rd gen straight to this one. Thoughts?

    Thanks all for the help!

Test drive to see if you like the new motor and transmission. Dealer should let you if you show interest.

Main diff is suspension, locker, bed outlet, OR has unpainted fenders, and interior fabric.

Also if you get the tacoma and you need tires down the road, you can fit 265/75/16 on stock suspension.

Was there motor and trans changes in the 3rd gens? As mentioned i am not buying new so Id prefer not to test drive new and deal with all that dealer hassle. If there is a motor/trans change within the 3rd gens, anything I should consider?

20% offroad/30% city stop and go /50% highway driving daily

I know the jeeps made that motor change to the Pinnstar over the older and sooooooo many people were happy about this. Let me know if there is something similiar in the 3rd gens, as I plan to keep this bad boy till it dies

$27k for this truck with 65k miles??? PASS!

I would rather buy a new 2018 SR Double Cab for $30k. 2018's come with TSS (Toyota Safety Sense), which has radar cruise, lane departure warning, etc. I think you'd appreciate it. Also, if you are financing it, they are offering a 1.9% right now.

Again, I would not buy that truck with that many miles on it.

I came from a Gx470 to my double cab Tacoma. Space from seating wise, I didn’t lose anything.

My GX’s was lifted on a full Dobinsons lift with rear coil conversion and sliders. I purposely bought an SR model as I figured I was gonna lift the Tacoma and to save money on the front end.

In stock form, I’m running 4Runner TrD trails wheels with 265/70/17 with no problems

The SR5 is a great truck, but 27G for one with 60K miles seems kinda high, you can get a new one for $31,600. I'd be trying to get that price down

No problem. If you're in the Nashville area, here is one I found:

    https://www.beamantoyota.com/new/To...ville-tn-fbba25670a0e0ae853c493b29bcca672.htm

I bet you could get another few hundred or grand off that price. But even at the list price, I would buy that over the '16 you posted.

Off-road wise, you will do just fine with a non Off-Road. I have 2 kids as well. They love riding in the truck. Especially around the neighborhood in the bed--make shift hay ride. Ha ha.

3rd gen got the 3.5 atkinson motor and a 6 speed auto. Gotta rev more to get to the power compared to your 4.0, and the transmission likes to shift early and often. Didn’t bother me but bothers some. The 2.7 is still available but in 2018 they phased out the manual, can only get it on the v6.

I will for sure be wanting the v6, I am daily driving the 3rd gen 3.4 currently so I am used to a little early shifty in with the factory 4:10s since it has the 265/70s and a 3" lift. I am going to see if they are running any promos at the dealer and just see what they have to offer in their line up.

Since I’m working landscaping I don’t want a huge lift either, does nothing but causes a ton of problems when you start getting to high anyways. Anyone used this one? I’m a huge believer in 5100s. I never plan to add armor

Also I found a 2018 SR5 but read something about the safety sensors don’t allow lifts? Or has their been a hack since.

Pretty sure there is still a $1000 Rebate going on the 2018s, make sure you get a thorough test drive...

I plan to take advantage of the 1.9% instead of the 1000$ rebate, i am pretty sure it has to be one or the other and the 1.9% is the way better option. Especially if i can write it off for work

Anyone had experience with this lift? I don’t like the idea of block lifts but I’m new to the Tacoma loft world. I know they offer new lift kits for the rear but those are typically 3” or more from what I see.

Any other combo ideas to get 2-3” of lift?

Plenty of '18's lifted, no worries with that.
