I remember watching the desert storm “victory” parade, full of pride. I was a teenager at the time, then I looked over at my mother and she was crying. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, these guys had a cakewalk and get a parade when they came home, while your father suffered and got spat on when he came home. (He died in 1986 from a drug overdose, a habit picked up in Vietnam) I’ll neber judge or look down on any veteran after that. Obviously I don’t look down on any desert storm vets for that, that was just what she was feeling at the time. I joined the air force a couple years later, and have the cool NY veteran plates to show for it. But all I did was babysit some nukes, while other vets sacrificed much more.

I rock the "Army" plate that Colorado offers, thought it looked cool. 20yrs retired as of a couple years ago, no stickers, no hats, don't go around asking for discounts. Just continue on with life.

That isn't a military specific plate though, is it? See a ton of them when I'm out there around Chantilly, VA.

No it's not, but it beats the hell out of VA veteran plates.

I just got mine in the mail and am rocking them out here in CA.

Personally I don’t display anything that ties me to the military. It’s not that I’m not proud of my service, just don’t have any desire to display it.

On a serious note, my shrapnel wounds were relatively minor. When I see a vet who lost a limb my heart aches. The Purple Heart Medal could use a tier system based on severity of wounds.

Hmmm, maybe. I think they handle the tier system at the VA C&P exam.

I'm certain my DV plate has gotten me out of at least one ticket.

I’ve had a Afghanistan vet plate for many years. No one has said anything to me.

She runs. What more can I ask for?
I got mine here in CO. Only thing military that I really show. Got it for the "Free admission to all state parks/recreation areas for veterans with a Disabled Veterans License Plate."

Maybe it'll get me out of a ticket sometime?:anonymous:

I would be taken aback if ever someone did say anything. I’m damn proud of my service, but I’m never prepared to talk about it in anymore detail than the year and location.

Me too. Without a doubt. At least two speeding tickets. Once I was caught dead to rights doing 87 in a 55. I never denied or disputed it. I was in the middle of nowhere on a straight two lane country road. I still don’t know what a cop would be doing out there at 5 am. But he got me, and we ended up talking about guns because I have a CCP and he let me go with a verbal warning after checking me out for warrants, etc.

Sometimes I prefer to give details, ask if I’ve ever killed anyone and you’re the one that’s going to walk away feeling like an asshole. I can deal with fresh shit for one night knowing they get to too.

Doesn’t happen much anymore but early on people asked far too many inappropriate questions.

Proud to be a Desert Shield -Storm vet but I refuse to pay N.Y. $40.00 to get a Vet plate or a plate with my branch . My opinion is you earned it and you should be offered the plate and not have to pay for it. Semper Fi and thank you for your service

Guess it depends where you are. If you’re a vet, here it’s a very minimal fee but you have to take the plate. If you’re rated high enough, you get a free plate but it has to be the DV. Either way, I’ve earned my scars and display mine proudly. That said, not sure I’d pay extra.
