"Sure, we'd be happy to wire something like that up for you. Bring it by, drop it off with us for a week, and $1500 later it'll be done! Don't want to handle that sort of work yourself, though, or it's guaranteed to explode."

The brakes are controlled by the brake controller in the vehicle, not just when the breakaway is activated.

The truck does charge the little battery in the breakaway box, there is a tiny inline "charger" right next to the battery itself. When the truck is on and hooked to the trailer it should charge the little battery. Maybe that little charger is also the relay?

If I could buy one brand new, I'd take my '87 Nissan in a heartbeat for a DD (especially if I could get it for the New-In-87-Price of $7500 that my dad paid for it originally). Out of everything I've owned, that truck was the most fun all-around driver. The '69 is better with the windows down, but I wouldn't want to DD it in cold weather.

@jethro If Mac is correct, and you have the batteries in series, then it is not a good idea. Your ground and power, coming from the truck via the red and white wires, should essentially be connected in parallel to the trailer's battery. This keeps the same voltage, but increases the amperage available (what you want). If you keep the in series, it increases the voltage and keeps the amperage the same (not what you want).

I would get the specifics of that break away device also. I don't think it's a 'one and done' deal, you should be able to reinsert the breakaway piece and reuse it in case of something accidentally yanking it out. I could be wrong about that particular model, but I believe most can be reused.

Well, it sounds like I will be doing exactly what I said above, only hook it up when it's not connected to the truck. Not a huge problem but not what I was hoping.

You could just go dual-battery on the Sierra. That'd simplify things. :notsure:

    What cho talkin bout?

When the trailer is not connected to the truck, I'm assuming the lights in the trailer don't work? If so, just connect the new battery inside the trailer in parallel with the truck's feed and ground wires. The trailer doesn't know the difference if it's connected to the truck or just an isolated battery.

Wish I had seen this post yesterday. Fell asleep after work, then was woken up by the most horrible noise I've ever heard my phone make.

Right, interior lights only work when truck is hooked and lights are on. So if it's connected in parallel rather than in series, I should be ok?

That's funny because I was just under my truck yesterday checking the U's and the shaft for play and saw the bearing and thought "If anything looks like crap it's this thing right here that I have to find out what it's called" and you've answered my question!

Awesome, want to shoot for the 20th to install? I'm gone this and next weekend but should be free after that (at least that's the hope).

I'm at about 70% travel right now....

Actually I ran out of bottles to fill with the whiskey. I'm not home enough to keep up with drinking it. I also had to cut back because of health reasons, finally quit smoking too... We will see how long that lasts though.
