They just looked at his payoff and went a little higher. Most people go for it as long as they at least pay off the old vehicle they’re happy.

Thanks for the input. I typically keep vehicles at minimum three years, this is a first time quick flip. As to your opinion on the value, I've already had multiple trade offers for more. Most recent was $34,500 by a different dealer. So I'd say your wrong in that regard.

This is exactly why I don’t bring up trades until the end of negotiations on price. If they know your payoff they try to use it to their advantage on the trade in quote.

Unfortunately I know people there and it's where I bought the 4runner originally. Tough not to keep it a secret haha.

Just tell them you are selling it private party and strictly deal on the truck price. Once you get the price you want then ask them if they want a shot at T4R before you sell it private party. Make both transactions separate.

Wrong in what regard? If a different dealer is willing to take the risk to get your business, they might offer you more.

Does not change the fact that a year old vehicle has little data to go by. Dealers gamble when they take a trade like that so it's all a matter of how much they're willing to lose.

You did the right thing shopping around at least.

Dealer quoted me $32,292 (includes Toyota $1000 rebate) for a sport access cab 4x4 AT with attached options. MSRP is $37,462 according to dealer’s numbers and appear to be about $1500 more when building through Toyota which seems odd. Seems like a great deal and all with just a request for an online quote, anything I might be missing?EE726EBB-3CAD-4790-A17D-30BD1DE55396.jpg

Forgot to add, I was also quoted $30,490 for base SR5 4x4 V6 and 24,450 for Base SR 4x4 I4 by another dealer.

I don't quit get it. How do you interpret column "H" in the spreadsheet; price before tax, title, registration, discounts, rebates? Isn't that essentially MSRP? What else is there?!

The math from my thick Italian way of thinking is:
    Price paid =
    MSRP (includes transport)
    + Dealer installed accessories
+ Dealer fee's (aka Doc fee, etc.)
    - Dealer discount
    - Rebate(s)/ incentive(s)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Other state specific costs to get total out the door (OTD) cost which should not be included in price paid
    Sales Tax
    Registration
    other?

Nope. Vehicle sales price is quite simply, the agreed upon price for the vehicle before any rebates/incentives (as these can be regional/type specific) and without any variable costs (taxes, doc fees, license, registration, warranty, dealers fees, etc. - as these can be regional/type specific as well). Options and Accessories are accounted for in the description.

Understood. Description should not include "discount" imo - that implies the negotiated dealer discount off MSRP.

But that IS necessary, as it is a BS number they are telling you to achieve your “final negotiated price”.

    Think of it this way....

+$40,591 - MSRP (which would include all Factory and Port installed options)
+$ 2,999 - Dealer BS Add-ons (Nitrogen, Protectant, ScotchGuard, Wheel Locks, etc.)
+$ 4,000 - Dealer Market “Adjustment” (I love this one, total BS)
    ______
(We don’t care what this number is)
-$12,000 - Dealer “Discount” (a number they made up based on their true cost and how much profit they want (Salesperson, Financer, Dealership gotta eat, ya know?))
    ______
$35,590 - THIS IS THE NUMBER we are all looking at for comparison, as it shows how “deep” their pocket is. The reason is, some dealers play the schenanigans above, others don’t. Cut to the chase- this is the price anyone from anywhere could put down on the table and walk out with that vehicle (of course you would have to pay whatever +TTL, based on whatever locality you lived in (based on buyer, not seller).

    Hope that helps clarify.

My truck was $42k MSRP and I ended up paying roughly $37k back in August (location New Hampshire). I went in a little early before the 2019s began to come on the scene so I’m not sure if I could have gotten more off by just waiting a month or so later.

    NoOne,
I think you bottom line and mine are essentially the same. Price paid is the bottom line number w/ dealer discount applied. My dealer installed options would include the items listed in your dealer BS add-on's. Fee's would include any market adjustment (or additional dealer profit :)). Frankly, I don't see that much blatant gouging anymore in my area, except in the case of special, very limited addition vehicles (i.e. Dodge Demon), you do occasionally see dealers add extra mark-up cause they can.

From what I've seen, that is pretty competitive. I would call it a good deal.
