My bad, I was looking at the D74. Let me look at the D710

 

Looks like GPS isn't on. Hit the Key button until you see GPS along the bottom and hit it to turn on.

 

You'll see the GPS icon in the top right corner.

 

That's weird. It was there earlier.

What's the difference between when it's solid or when it's blinking on the GPS icon?

Sorry I just got this installed 2 days ago and still learning it.

 

Solid while searching for satellites, blinking when active.

 

Yeah earlier it was solid but never went to blinking. Maybe I need to move it around a bit. I would think it should be getting the satellites right there.

Just checked and there is a digipeater within range so I should be hitting it. It's at 320 ft and showing people further away than me.

 

You'll love it! It's a great radio! I used the Rfinder web site "Route" search for Huntsville, TX to Dallas where I frequently visit family. Put them into a group, and scan them on the A side while running APRS on the B side. Catch a few QSO's along the way.

 

It's slow to acquire. Takes a few minutes.

 

I'll mess with it tomorrow some. I'll check out Rfinder right quick and see what's around for my trip to Florida tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

 

It takes average 3-5 minutes for the icon to start blinking at first start up with mine. A few weeks ago when in the San Bernardino Mtns near Big Bear I did not get a lock until I was almost at the bottom and pretty much in the out skirts of Johnson Valley. Once I had a lock there wasn't any issues with loosing connection for the rest of the day.

 

edit: does anyone know of an external GPS puck/antenna that will work with the D710 ?

Looks like its in the control panel so not sure how this piggyback gps antenna would work better.

 

that was made for the first version of the D710 which did not have GPS, and it worked well from everything I've read about it. It's not offered for sale any more.

My goal is to have an external antenna that will be able to mounted in a better location for faster satellite signal acquisition.

We should put together ToyoTOTA contest. Toyota Tacomas On The Air.

How many of you guys have HF installed? I'm thinking we allow both portable and mobile operation. Although I'm tempted to make mobile contacts worth two points each and portable contacts worth one point each. If you dont have HF installed, then operate portable with a shack rig sitting on the tailgate and a folding chair. Each Tacoma to Tacoma contact is a multiplier.

Work the contest 8 hours on a Saturday? Or a 1 hour sprint? For every mile you traveled from a paved road, you get one point added to final score (not multiplied).

Other ideas?
