I'm planning on mounting my cb with a ditch light type mount on the passenger side hood hinge. I was thinking about mounting it on the rear by the taillight so i could get a longer antenna in the future. I saw the mounts that bolts in between the tailgate and the bedside but I do not want to chip the paint in that area since the clearance isn't very wide. Anyone see any issues with mounting it low behind the taillight? I was thinking about removing the plastic cover below the taillight and building a bracket through that area.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You want your RF energy going into as much free space as possible, and as little of the truck as possible for maximum range. Truck-to-truck, in the open, you won't have issues with your placement. But, it will make a difference if you're trying to reach anyone at range. I'd recommend putting it as high as you can on your truck with as little of the truck as possible blocking the antenna mast itself.

Only pic I have of mine. I made it out of some deck strapping. Twisted it and bent at 90° and drilled a hole. If you want more pics lett me know and I'll go take some.

How did you route your cable up to the cab?

Ran it through the frame. Under the passenger seat there is a rubber plug I went through that and into the center console. I had just enough cable using a 18' coax.
