Buy a 6 lugger ... 4 banger 4x4 regular cab if you can find one. You will love the extra capability.

    1. check monthly for wear
    2. since you are in the rust belt I would disassemble, clean and re-install once a year.
    3. Continue the drain/fil every 20K miles.
    4. Inspect and clean/lube every 5K miles along with tire rotation.
    5. Check level often and continue with synthetic change at least every 7500 miles

Don't forget to grease the U-joints every oil change.
Spray the chassis with Fluid Film bi-monthly
Flush brake fluid every two years
    Change coolant every two years
Your truck should last a long tine.

I will not buy a used vehicle with over 100K unless the seller has all service records and price is right...

If I find such a truck, I'll sell this in a heartbeat.

Should I have my mechanic or the dealer do all that...

I have the know-how but not the space or the resources to do anything beyond installing a new stereo...

Also, I am particularly attached to my Tacoma. I took road test to get my driver's license in this truck, I've been through two girlfriends with this truck, and my truck protected me from a drunk driver once...

What I'd really like to do is keep my Tacoma and buy something else with 4WD or AWD. Possibilities include:

    2003-2005 Astro/Safari AWD
    Some kind of older Subaru
    A square-body Suburban
    A 3rd Gen T4R
    An S-10 Blazer

Change the power steering fluid. Note that it takes ATF and NOT power steering fluid!

Ouch, the dealer will be too expensive and
Sorry I assumed you were a DIY'er. Just drive it for three years and trade it in.

Power steering pump went out on my Ford. $400 in labor and parts to replace. Not bad if you ask me.
A flush for the power steering pump is like $200. After a couple flushes you bought yourself a new one? I almost have half a mind to let it go.

I do check the fluid though, if it starts looking nasty I would flush it. Regardless if it's acting up or not. I just wouldn't touch outside of that.

Make sure you change your air filters both cabin and engine

I agree. I haven't done my Tacoma yet, it's just getting to the point I'm thinking about it (85k). But in my old truck I did it couple of times in its life (about 300k) and I never had any trouble with the PS pump or steering box ever. It was all still original after 25 years when I sold it except for the idler arm (Total Chaos, which absolutely rocked) and tie rod ends.

Each time I'd do a flush the PS groan would go away completely. Also, those old recirculating ball boxes would tend to get a pulsing as you approach the full left or right lock, and that would stop happening after a flush.

That's good. I plan on keeping it until gasoline is illegal.

Check that... I'll modify it to take E98 at that point.

I just wanted to say I felt the same way that inspections were a big pain in the butt. 10 years ago I changed professions and became an inspection mechanic. Now what I have seen, I am glad we have them. I had a Ford Expedition come in for inspection with a broken lower ball joint. The ball joint was sheared right off. I have no idea how they made it to our garage. Another time a mini van came in for inspection, I had to go back and ask if this was a joke. On the way into my bay I noticed that the brakes were grinding metal on metal.

The reason we have inspections is some people have to be forced to get their cars fixed or they would keep driving them as parts were falling off on the highway.

To even think about selling your Tacoma is blasphemous. Glad you came to your senses.

I’ll be keeping my Tacoma until it dies or I die

@Plain Jane Taco already knows about the time back in 2016 when I got pissed at a couple of construction workers for blocking the street with their work trucks to engage in idle chitchat, and proceeded to drive my Taco onto the sidewalk and partially through somebody's yard to get around them. Luckily, the only damage was my right rear tire, which only cost $75 to replace because I'd purchased a no questions asked "road hazard warranty".

My parents were pissed at me for a long time after that stunt, and I've really calmed down since then.

Some time after that incident, I'd come outside to grab the newspaper, and the same balding middle-aged man in the same white Silverado happened to be turning around in my culdesac, and he gave me the death stare as he circled the culdesac. I was about to flip him the bird but thought better of it. He drove away and I haven't seen him since.

He was just pissed at me because he wanted so badly to call the cops on me, but his supervisor (same guy who did the walk-thru with my parents on their new house) determined that would be bad for business since my parents had just bought a very expensive house from his company, and calling the cops on their kid might lead to negative PR.

The Chevrolet Trax is one of my favorite vehicles to detail because it is quite small and doesn't have as many windows to clean as other "cute utes". I also get paid the same amount of money I would get paid if I were detailing something larger like a Subaru Legacy!
