Please help me identify this noise?

Ive been hearing a noise when I'm rolling backwards in reverse. It's a clink sound like a metal to metal clink.

It does it after I shift into drive also...

Could this be my universal joint going bad?

I'll try and post up a short video clip and try and capture the sound i'm talking about

mine does this too! i thought it was just my little bungies rubbin against each other in the bed, but does it sound like 2 chains hitting eachother??

 

yup that's the sound!

And looks like no way to grease them on my Pre-Runner

Anybody know the cost of replacing the front and rear U-joints?

 

This is a common noise on a lot of newer model Toyota vehicles. If this is a noise you typically only hear when first stopping in reverse or drive while changing moving direction (forward or reverse) it's very likely the disc brake pads shifting in the saddles. Tearing apart the front brakes and putting a little SilGlide (or similar product) at the points the pads contact the saddles and shims should eliminate this noise.

It is a clicking noise, which usually goes away after the first or second stop, normally when your truck has sat and the brake parts are cold. If that doesn't describe the noise, then I'll need more details.

 

you are talking about the sound that is like 2 chains hitting right?

 

Not a U-joint. a U-joint would make a pretty nice thud almost like a knock. I would say if its when rolling and between shifts then check your brake pads you should see some shiny on the calipers where they have been shifting if it has been doing it for a good while.

Also if it sounds metallic check for any loose parts on the truck like a loose skid plate or some thing of the sort.

 

Check your brake pads for sticking inside the calipers. Makes a metallic clinking noise.

 

How about a popping clank sound? I get that when I reverse to the right. It's really frustrating. My passengers get scared of it when they hear it for the first time.

 

Sounds like the suspension settling, unless you have a 4x4. If you have a 4x4 check your CV axles.

Worst case scenario you have some loose lug nuts on one of your wheels.

 

check to make sure your carrier bearing bolts are tight before u start taking the u-joint apart.
