Flashback to the south side, 1958, and two 16 year old Polish kids from The Bush scrape up enough money together to buy an engineless '40 Ford coupe, their favorite body style. In fact, they were in a club called "40's Forever" - a car club of old school gearheads who built real hotrods, with the requirement that the bodies of their cars couldn't be modded, only the drivetrains. In case you're not familiar with Chicago neighborhoods, the Bush has never been one of the wealthier 'hoods. Far from it. Somehow (and I'm not sure I want to know how) these kids got a hold of a 1957 DeSoto Fire Flite Eight hemi - a monster engine back then. I've read it was the first mass produced American engine to achieve 1 hp per cubic inch. They also got their hands on a '39 LaSalle "side shift" 3 speed trans, an early Chet Herbert roller race cam, and a couple of big Carter 4 bbl carbs, and managed to put all this together. For a while, they were the terror of Rainbow Beach, 83rd street, and wherever else they used to drag. They also took it down to US 30 dragstrip way back when. But by the time he was 18, my dad wanted to break out and go to college, and he sold his interest in the car to his buddy for tuition money, and they parted ways. Now fast forward to 1996, and the son has followed in his father's footsteps. I have a street truck that I built up for Mustang-hunting,

and I put it in a car show not too far from where my parents live, and invited them to come see. While wandering around at the show, my dad sees an example of his favorite: a '40 Ford Tudor and he strolls over to take a look. He was quite surprised to see that this gorgeous show car (supposedly a World of Wheels show champ) was sporting a Fire Flite eight.

His heart really started to race at that sight, so he got a look under the car and sure enough, it had the LaSalle side shifter. Barely able to contain himself, he asked the owner where he got the car, and he said it was from a widow who now lived on the East Side. He asked the name, and it turns out it was the woman who married the guy that was my dad's childhood buddy. Of course he wanted to buy the car, but this guy who ends up being a collector, and said he'd never part with it. The Ford had since been turned into a total show queen - new leather interior and utterly perfect body and paint - too many show trophies to count. However, he said if he ever changed his mind, he would call my dad. In the meantime, my dad becomes friends with this guy and they're hanging out, going to car shows, and other auto events. Now fast forward a couple more years, and the current owner ends up having a debilitating stroke and can no longer manage his car collection which he starts to sell off. Needless to say, it didn't take more than one phone call to my dad before he was racing over to his house with checkbook in hand. So now, in his spare garage, he's got a show ready, 1940 Ford Standard Tudor - the actual car he built 60 years ago.

Yes, I've driven it. It's still pretty fast, and it sounds heavenly, what with that lumpy cam, and unrestricted dual exhaust... Cool story, eh? Oh, sorry for the verbosity; I'm working on a version I can send into Hot Rod magazine or something. But I have limited writing skills and wouldn't know where to actually send it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This makes me so stinkin happy that I stirred up a dust storm. Got sand in my eyes... for cannot even begin to fathom your dads joy. And I’m so excited for him!! Give him a hug for me (and pretend glide your hand over the fender as you walk by for me. )

Good morning all.

Dad did well yesterday and now we're waiting on the results to see if surgery is or isn't an option for the leaky valves. My nephew is getting married this afternoon and my sister (his mother) broke her foot Thursday night. The concrete work at the house is about 2weeks behind and the back yard is a mess. Hopefully they'll be forming up the patio today and pouring it during the week. Excavator is still in the back yard but no keys

I picked up a used commercial style mower this week from the neighbor. A little work and it'll be a great mower. My tractor is starting to have issues that will be expensive for parts.

Both of my mowers are broke. The old 17yr one has a gas leak at tank,don’t see how to get to it yet. New one spun the drive belt,again. Grass is getting taller and rain forecasted for next few days,again.

I'm thinking I'm going to turn my sprinklers off early this year. Usually when it starts turning brown I try to save it for as long as I can. It'll quit growing but stay green for another 3-4 weeks. First sign this year and I'm turning it off...probably before we leave at the end of the month
