    I was looking at a top light bar, but didnt want to deal with wind noise, theft, or that look.

    I then looked at a grill light bar, but it either blocked your license plate or required expensive brackets and stuff.

    Now I'm wondering if I can just get rid of my fog lamps (never use them) and put some lights down there without changing the face of my vehicle or becoming a wiring genius. how much light power for the money can I get? Anyone got a recommendation. Is it comparable to a light bar?

    I have Cali raised amber pods for fogs and while I can’t say they are comparable to a light bar,
    They definitely help.

    I have a 20” behind the grill so I use them to complement one another.

    Yeah I want to avoid the light bar behind the grill. I do t want to buy a bar, new grill and brackets ($500).

    I'm looking for something 100% off road only, i.e. no concern of blinding people.

    What year is your truck?

    Honestly you could probably but up to 55watt led pods in place of your fog lights and not change wiring (splice into oem wires or buy adapters from Cali Raised for $10) of you have a 2005+ truck. The harder part would be how to mount them, as the only bolt in bracket options are $100+.
    But if you can fab some metal brackets to bolt in place of oem fog lights and hold the new led pods, great.

    Honestly a grill led bar might be cheapest. my 2nd gen has a peice of flat steel bar across the core support behind the grill (like $5 lowes) a 30" Amazon bar ($50?) and a grillcraft mesh grill ($50 amazon).
    With the right light bar and position, you could probably have it shine through the lower portion of any of the 2005-2015 trucks.
    Or most 2016+ third gens have open enough grills for light to pass through.

    If you have a 1st gen, 2004 or earlier, youd probably have to get an aftermarket mesh grill insert.

    What "bolt in bracket options" you recommend?

    For my money the Hella 500 lights are high quality and not expensive. They aren't trendy LED or light bars, though. I currently have a set of IPF 968, which are similar to the 500FF I think, and find the pattern useful. The middle is slightly more focused than high beams with a little spread pattern are the edges.

    BTW, someone did a monster test of lights that fit in the stock location. Not sure if that was a 2nd or 3rd gen truck. Mostly the various designs weren't very well focused as fog lights as I recall. But since you're after something longer range that might be OK. Although that location is really not going to be very good for a driving pattern, so I wouldn't bother personally.

    Dang. There’s a guy who has an avatar where his truck is pointed at a gravel mound and it’s nuts. Like see him from space nuts.

    All his stuff is off brand.

    I’m considering the KC G4 LED. About the brightest DOT plug and play LED fogs for the Tacoma.

    We'd love to set you up with Baja Designs Fog Lights for your Tacoma!

    These are designed to replace the factory fog lights with our Squadron Series LED Auxiliary Lights. With the Squadron Sport you can expect at least 3-4x the usable light over OEM. Unfortunately these aren't quite in your budget - with our forum discount the pricing is a little over $300.

    Starting at $364.95 ($328.46 - coupon code: BDForums)

    I had four Hella 500FF on my 2005;
    [IMG]

    They were great and affordable, I watched here on tw and got a N-Fab light bar mount for them..
    I was happy until I got a set of Squadron Sports and they blew the 4 55w lamps away output wise.

    Now I have Squadron Sports and Pros on Fog and Ditch spots;
    [IMG]

    If you are looking for cheap it's going to be a LED lightbar, if you want lights that outlast the truck go with BajaDesigns..
