a bit of show & go
    Quick background:
I've got an afe cai and the apr x1 installed.

Also got the dt long tubes and the dt pipe bomb y-pipe.
I've a got a magnaflow cat back with a second magnaflow muffler installed just after the y-pipe.
It sounds okay, fairly loud but not obnoxious.
The only annoyance is a higher pitch drone/rattle between 2500 & 3000 rpm that I'm almost positive is coming from the y-pipe.

    Options I've come up with:
    1) Exhaust wrapping the y-pipe
    2) cut & install new resonators on the "pipe bomb" y-pipe
    3) Do #2 and cut the y-pipe at the flange & feed into a dual-in/single-out muffler and then a single pipe back to the 2nd muffler
    4) Do #2 and cut the y-pipe at the flange & feed into a dual-in/dual-out muffler and then two pipes back to a 2nd dual-in/single-out muffler
So some variations of a dual exhaust but not a true dual, I've heard true duals don't work well on n/a tacos.

    thoughts, comments, etc.

I'd be curious to hear more on this statement...

Any 'V'-shaped engine with 2 banks of cylinders should benefit from a true-dual exhaust.

Possibly you heard "don't work well on Tacos" in general...? Body & drivetrain configuration can play apart in making true-duals work...

    Oh Yeah!!!
Seriously, I ran it for a while and that anoying sound was permanent. No warm up and it will go away, no weather variations, nothing. It just sounded like crap between those RPMs and thats usually where I'd be shifting....

I dumped it went back to stock, and no problems since.

Do not do a true dual, you will loose performance. If you want dual for looks, do the single in dual out Magnaflow. Other than that, stay with what you got minus the Pipe-Bomb...

Exception: To anyone that wants to run the Pipe-Bomb, I would only recommend it if you have not installed the DTLT Headers. For some odd reason they do not make a great pair. URD Y-pipe is a way better design, but even with a resonator in front of my Exh, "Way too Loud", LOL...

Unless you are on the 1/4 mile track trying to drop couple tenths of a second, the Y-pipe is not nesseccary. Only reason I would replace it is if rear cats clogged up.

    Previous set ups:

    Borla Cat Back
Borla CB, w/JBA Headers (Descent sound, not much power)
Borla CB/JBA/Removed rear Cats(Leaks in welding, but nice sound)
Borla CB/JBA H./URD Y Pipe(Sounded sweet, but Headers seem to Leak)
    Borla CB/JBA/URD/Vibrant Resonator(Amazingly silent)
    Borla CB/DTLT/URD/Res(LOUD as hell)
Borla CB/DTLT/Pipe Bomb/Res(Sounded sweet except for right about 2500-3000 RPM)
Same set up Dumped after axle (Just for different look)
Reinstalled Stock Y(No anoying sound at certain RPM, but too quite for me)
Removed resonator moved exh. closer to Y-pipe, side exit before rear passenger tire(Current set up, sounds sweet except at WOT, a little raspy)

LOL, so as you can see I've tried it all, and I tell you the worst was while running the Pipe Bomb.

Just trying to Help, Still looking for the perferct Exhaust set up, think I found It. I will post when complete....

This engine relies more on exhaust scavenging than lower back pressure. So separating the two exhaust streams means the pulses are divided up and in general that hurts performance. With an SC'd engine might not be such a big deal...but with an NA engine-not worth it.

Easily accounted for with proper pipe sizing.

Really though, for N/A, unless you want to run dual 2" piping back (which probably won't sound that great as smaller piping won't be as deep), you are really better off eliminating 1 set of cats, and adding a muffler (if you want a good sound).

Has anyone figured out exactly what the cause of the 2500-3000rpm noise is? Is it the material? is it the hanger welded to the resonator?

I've attached a pdf of what I though about doing:
replacing the y-pipe resonators with longer ones and essentially remaking the rest of the y-pipe so both sides feed directly into a 2-in-1-out magnaflow and then carry on to the rest of my magnaflow catback.
I also thought about adding some flex pipe between the y-pipes and the 1st muffler.
What are your thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I never could figure it out. I even had a shop weld the middle section rather than having a clamp there, but sound stayed.

I say go for it if you have the cash. The cheapest bet is to put back your stock Y pipe. It flows good enough, and you will be glad you eliminated that anoyance of a sound.

keep us posted if you fab up your idea.

    Good luck with it.
