I use the rear cubby to store my kayak tie downs, which works since I have a tonneau cover. I used to keep them in the covered rear center console....until they took the cover away.

 

When I had my Tacoma, I used mine all the time. I had a SR5 so long compartments on both sides. One side was the receiver and ball for my hitch and other side was ratchet straps. I didn’t care that they collected water and dust. I kept stuff in there that wasn’t weather sensitive. The only thing I didn’t like was no security for them which is why we made the locking steel doors. Living in Baltimore City people would steal shit just because.

Also, if you have any clean socks that you want to "dirty up"- would probably work really well for that.

I have these cubbies (16' SR5) but don't use them because the dirt and water saturate whatever's in there.

I have opened mine once to fluid film the latches.

 

I can never figure Toyota's motivation. That storage box, which I use frequently, is quite useful. Did Toyota save money? Did someone forget to put it in the mold for the 19s? It's like not putting greaseable ujoints in Tacomas after 2016. They are great trucks, but marketing and engineering at Toyota seem to be from another planet.

 

If I change in a ski area parking lot, I keep my keys, and what not in there.

 

What a shame. I carry emergency gear in mine along with some rope/bungee cords.

 

I think corporate plays Pin the tail on the donkey when making these decisions, like the manual transmission option.

 

I do the same, and the outlet for the differential breather extension I put in the wall of the box.

Yep. My 18 TRD Pro had them installed at San Antonio and charged be 55 bucks for them. I use them occasionally, so didn't squawk.

 

Don’t blame it on the engineers. Not their fault. Finance gets involved in new product development and drives increased margins and marketing supports it by doing “research” suggesting that these features aren’t being used by customers. It’s annoying but some of it is true. Look how many people said they don’t use the storage cubbies. Why add cost if most people aren’t using it? I garuantee that 90% of Tacoma owners don’t grease their u-joints. Either way, none of this is an engineering decision. It’s a frustrating environment to be in as an engineer.

It's one thing to leave out that storage box, but quite another to discontinue the greaseable usjoints, which are highly functional, and if you don't grease them over time, well it's no fun losing a driveshaft off-road or on the freeway. I've seen both. Perhaps it's marketing/finance and not engineering, but the latter issue has consequences.

The engineers know that. Marketing/finance don’t care. They only care about SGM and delivering critical to customer features. If they can justify removing things that most customers won’t miss while increasing margin, then no amount of arguing from the engineers will win that debate. I’ve been in plenty of these meetings (for power tools not trucks). They are very annoying.
