I found a great spot last October in Kaibab on the North Rim side. That where you're looking? PM me. I'll dig up the GPS coordinates.

Curious what alot of you guys with truck tents are doing if you are going out for a drive. Do you pack up everything then setup again when you get back?

Im looking to get a roof tent, but not sure I want to have to tear down every time we want to go into town, or offroading, or just get some supplies.

The whole point in camping for me is not leaving. Whether that be running the river, mountain biking, or hiking. My truck is home base for me

This is why I'm looking into building out a trailer. Keep a tent on that, and then you can just drive the truck when/where you need. On our trips we do a lot of dispersed/National Forest camping so always need to drive to activities and stuff. (Right now I have no RTT. Just a regular tent... Big Agnes Big House 6, FTW!!!)

RTT’s are nice for a lot of camping scenarios, but not all. I use my RTT for 90% of my truck-related camping excursions, but if I want a “basecamp” of sorts, I’ll sometimes just pitch my regular ground tent. Just because you have an RTT doesn’t mean you need to use it exclusively. I will, however, quite often use my RTT even if I have a basecamp setup. Setup and takedown are fairly quick, so that’s not usually an issue for me.

Yup, all depends on your intended usage and facilities used. For me, I'd maybe use the RTT 10% of the time. A ground tent is more versatile for me. Maybe if I get a trailer one day, I will attach one to that. But that comes with its own issues as well.

It literally takes 4 minutes to take down or set up the RTT. I don’t find this to be an obstacle.

My whole camp would probably take 10 minutes to take down, but if I were returning to the site later, I would tend to leave those items set up to reserve my spot. The tent is the big item that I wouldn’t want stolen, so I like having that with me and don’t think a trailer would work well for me.

Ultimately, though, I plan to replace the RTT with a FWC, which would be even easier to take down if I wanted to leave camp. All it takes is money.

GoFastCamper (#41), ARB 2500 Awning with Full Room, Mobtown Off-road Sliders and Full Aluminum Skids.
Depending on what you get and how elaborate you want to be breaking down camp can be very quick (my GoFastCamper) folds down in literally 30 seconds. Obviously if I have an awning, room, stove ext out it can be longer. I did the ground tent for a while, I’d NEVER go back, absolutely zero chance. It’s so much more comfortable and dry to be up higher.

That said if I didn’t want to do a RTT and or didn’t wanna spend the money I would most certainly buy an ARB Awning with Deluxe room and use a cot or air mattress. I have one off the side of my truck and it’s amazing. For less than 500 bucks it gives you 2.5M x 2.5M with about 7 ft height opens to have screens or walls or be wide open. It’s brilliant, honestly, Probably takes under 5 mins to set up and take down, it’s a very cool alternative to a tent and a lot of space.

I have a few other buddy’s that run “traditional” RTT’s, they do take a bit to set up and take down but aren’t terrible. One of them defiantly is in the market for a Offroad trailer so he can leave it set and and go out for the day.

Really every option has its pluses and minuses but as I said an awning with a room is a pretty great way to get into the game for pretty inexpensive and if you do add a RTT later, well you’ll still have an awning!! Just my $.02.

Other downside of a traditional RTT is height clearance. Most are TALL and limit your access to garages, under trees ext... just something else to be aware of.

It was a lot of work, digging and ultimately Hi-lifting the tree to get this rig through...

Tested out some new camp kitchen gear, new axe, new waterport, & rarely used backpacking stove during a camping/shooting trip in the desert with good friends.

Bees really liked the waterport. Spam and eggs jumbo taco was not bad. Winds made it a little hard to start the flame on the backpacking stove, but it eventually got started on the little portable stove. MSR pan was non stick, but I did notice some discoloration on the pan surface after cooking on it, while washing it. Axe is a 3.5lb Razorback from Home Depot and was a little dull. A 3lb mallet helped to split some wood a friend brought over. The Costco logs I bought didn't need to be used, but nice to know they sell them. All their employees who I asked didn't even know they sold firewood... Front Runner kitchen set is nice, but one could get something cheaper online, for sure.
