I don't think the compartment is molded in, I believe it is cut out after the fact so that would not require any design changes. When we were doing Kaizen and Six Sigma at work we had to find ways to eliminate things and speed up cycle time, that is what this seems like.

That makes sense. I like how Toyota cheaped out on my base 2nd gen. No door badges.

Just chiming in that I use my cubbies constantly. As with many many others I keep 4 ratchet straps in the large one and 5 or 6 bungee cords in the small one. I haven't experienced much dirt or water issues but if I have to replace said straps and cords every 5 years thats fine by me.

Anyone look up the cost of the compartment? I can see many 19 on up owners cutting in and making their own like all the 2nd gens and 16-18 models. It is very useful.

Useless here in swampy FL, anything put in that cubby will be rusted and/or covered in mold within a day or two.

You must not drive in any dirt then. Mine is constantly full of dirt and sand from off roading.

Mud, rain, sand, dirt, grass.... clean and dry inside! Cubby Covers and Gaskets FTW!
Installed and complete in about 10-15 minutes. Should have been that way from the factory, to be honest.

Not totally useless. You could stash a baby alligator in there.

Was responding to the guy who said he must be missing something because he never had any issues with dirt, grime, etc. in the storage compartments. I understand you can seal them off. But absent that, they are a trap for dirt, dust, grime.

You think the rear diff whine is bad?

Those little bastards would make way too much noise.

I’ve never really used them except for a tow hitch and tie downs. The Mobtown locking metal covers are a great addition.

With @micwillia 's cubbie caps, mine are clean, dry, and dust-free. I have a 30ft strap, shackle receiver, spare shackle, and hitch pin in the left bin, and three ratchet straps in the left one.

Yeah, they should have been sealed from the factory.

I didn't even mention the pollen storms, the lovebugs or the 90 degree temps on Christmas day.

    It's a real paradise.
