I feel we should get someone to try the 285/75r17 for 34" skinnies as well as 285/75r18 for 35" skinnies.

also before you bash the 18" wheel it's the same amount of sidewall as any other 285/75r??'s and 35's. very capable offroad and should have good on road characteristics to not float on turns windy days.

    None at all.
I was actually surprised. I was just up in nor-cal on some steep rutted out fire roads.

I’m hoping to go with 285/75/17 for my next size and have been trying to compile all the info I can on them, seems to be a size not a lot of people run unfortunately! I’m tentatively between Cooper ST Maxx or AT3 XLT, Wildpeaks, and Ridge Grapplers. Toyo has some in this size as well but they are real pricey.

Do 285/75s really qualify as skinny tires?

I say skinny depends on height. Like a ratio

    285/75r16 not skinny
    285/75r17 kinda
    285/75r18 skinny

I figured it was tread width.

    Again. A ratio of height/width.

Most people are going to say an 11" wide 35" tire looks funny because its so skinny to industry norm

I don't think I could ever look at a 285 and be like "wow that's a skinny tire."

Re: 285/75/17- not much info cause the tire selection is meh and in most cases they are as expensive if not more expensive than 315s. I considered that size but man $$$. I was also already set up for 35s so getting a set of 315/75/16 STT Pros for $900 was a no brainier.

It's all opinionated. You wanna make it scientific some reason

I'd say anything over a 3.05 maybe 3.1 when you take diameter devided by width once converted to standard?? Maybe what you think lol

I guess a 255/85r16 is not skinny compared to the tires on a Prius ya know.

285/75/17 are a sweet tire! i wish i had them on my JKU and JK for driving performance instead of the 315's that were way wider and only 1/2 inch taller. of course looks wise the majority want the wider tire, but the majority do no understand the physics of tire performance! the 285/75r17 are a sick tire for those that run a 17 inch rim or those that want a little more width than what a 255/85r16 makes

I agree wide tires look awesome, but the narrower the easier it may be to clear.

Yeah but cost isn't an issue in this thread. 255/85r16 are ridiculous as well unless going maxxis which I think are great tires. At least in the offroad atv/dirt bike world. Even round track karts

Yeah, probably. I'm sure it's for someone, I just decided I'd rather save a couple hundred bucks and continue to live the 315 life

likely the best tire I have even run are some toyo mt 255/85r16 on my 2015 JK after siping them manually. ppl just assumed they were skinny 35's. the result of the 255 toyo mt was only 1/2 inch ground clearance loss over a true 35 ( which is like a unicorn ) and great gas mileage with the skinnies

You might be on to something. A 255/85-16 has a height-to-width ratio of 3.31:1. If we use that as a standard, it gives us something to work with.

    Lower ratio = not skinny

If 3.31 is entry into skinny then the 255/70r17 should be removed and you also don't consider a 34x10.5r17 skinny. Geez I thought the 34 was skinny
