Has anyone had a problem with the corner pieces in the OEM Tonneau Cover folds breaking? I've included a few pictures as both corner pieces broke off on my cover during the first time I took the cover off this weekend. The replacement parts are $20-30 and I don't particularly want to wait to work with the service department on a possibly warranty claim. But I really don't want this to happen again.

And it might have been my fault as I had to take the cover off in a rush though I didn't drop it. I can see one corner breaking off, but 2?

Any thoughts? I've ordered one already but just found the second is broken too.

I'd go to the dealer, they should warranty it

Thanks, I decided to pay for the first myself (before I realized the second was broken too) because I wasn't sure the cost savings was worth having to schedule 1 appointment for them to look at it and determine the part needed to be ordered and then 1 appointment to have them take the 2 screws out to replace it. Basically, that's like 3-4 hours of my time versus paying $18 and doing it myself. Now I'll have to pay another $18 for the second but I've kind of already started down that path...and will be writing Toyota a nasty email about the difficulty I had getting help.

In any case, my question was more about if someone had this happen before and what I should do to prevent it from happening again. I guess I can treat is like glass and carefully take it off with a friend and sit it down flat...but it is a truck and should be a little more sturdy than that. And I wasn't throwing it around or anything, I find it very poor that it broken the first time I took it off.

Any thoughts on future prevention? Thanks again.

I've broken mine twice. It's definatly a design flaw. Toyota has warrantied it both times.

Sorry to hear about your issue but I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I've paid for the replacements this time but I'm going to take them out when I make my next service visit to get them to order new ones under the warranty, at least then I'll have a spare set.

Have any of you been able to make the flap toward the tailgate have less gap? I can pull it up and it can reveal if there is anything in the back. I'm thinking there has to be a way to adjust the gap.

I have the same issue and brought it to the service manager for warranty. He said that they tried to check it out but there was no way for adjustments to make it snug. Some of the covers on their lots are the exact same way. However, my brother has the exact same tacoma but his cover will close perfectly with no gap.

As far as the gap is concerned I had the exact same concern when they installed mine on my 2017. What I found is that when you lower the last panel on the tailgate, the initial click where it catches is not as tight as it goes. If you put pressure directly above the rear latch points on both sides you will be able to push it down further and it will click a second time. This pulls it tight to the siderails and tailgate. I had to show this to the service manager minutes after I picked the truck up. My original complaint to him was that there was about 1/4 gap on the last panel over the tailgate which I did not find acceptable. Even the service manager was surprised to see that the latch has a second grab point where it pulls it tight.

Is anyone still experiencing these issues? My 16 taco sport is now having this issue where the right side hinge at the first section has broken off and the left side isn’t looking so good, both leak. I’m being bounced back and forth from Toyota and the dealership for repair. From what see, it’s a design flaw. Which is what the dealer says. How’d you get it taken care of?

Can you include pictures? I had to replace 2 pieces on my cover when I first took it off that got because I didn't know 100% what I was doing (and I had someone that was in a rush helping me).

Sorry Yoda, I completely forgot this was my thread where I posted those pictures...brain fart...

In my case, I was able to get the service department to order new parts under warranty but I think they were skirting the rules for me. I had actually ordered the parts myself, so I have an extra set for when this happens again (because I'm sure it's going to due to the design).

Disappointing, but that's what happened to me. Not sure if it helps you...does seem like a design flaw but maybe you can talk your service department into replacing it. I think the parts themselves cost me around $30 each.

Don't mean to thread jack, but since were on the subject of Toyota cover issues, does anyone else have the issue where latches fail to disengage? For example, when I want to take the cover off or put it on, but I can't because one of the latches fails to open.

Each lid is very heavy as in heavy-duty like a tank...don't drop them in place, set them down easy and maybe this piece will not break off..or when removing, don't set on edge, set flat...just a thought. Also, when tailgate is up and cover is locked down, it is very easy for a bad dude to use a coat hanger to slip under the rear gasket of the cover above the tailgate and pull the handle to lift the lid...so I pilfer-proofed using an old Tupperware lid which is very rigid jet flexible; it just snaps tight. Hanger slides over it. Screws were already there. With tailgate down, just lift to access the pull handle, as seen below. Tried to use the hanger but could not get it under as the ridgid edge of the plastic. Just a thought.
