the toyo 255 has a diameter of 33.5, the cooper st maxx and dick cepek have a diameter of 32.8. the older cooper st have a diameter of 33.2, so do the bfg km2 i think, if not 33.1..!.. so a lot a variation in actual size from each manufacturer, the cooper tires for example have a .5 inch difference yet are the same metric size but different generation tires. I have ran the older st tires and they were very nice, but very true to the skinny tire as they looked thin

Just a starting point, not necessarily the threshold. 3 is probably a good general rule.

I like this idea y'all have been discussing. Just a simple way to roughly determine if a tire is skinny. I agree with the 'not exact science' idea as certain brands run different.

I really like the ST Maxx but for some more $ I am thinking Toyo (255/85/16). I like the way the Toyo looks and that it is taller.

Is it not as simple as, the tire has to be as skinny or skinnier than the stock taco tire? Were talking skinny specific to our trucks, not any other brand or make. just my 0.02.

I’m thinking of putting 255/75/17 duratracs on 17x8.5 scs f5 wheels. 8.5” is the max width for 255 tires, does anyone have this setup? Does it make the tires look ballooned out? I don’t do any hardcore off-roading but quite a bit of dirt roads and in the northeast so quite a bit of snow.

Are you familiar with Scott Brady? Have you read the whitepaper he wrote on skinny tires? There is a massive difference in the arctic trucks that are trying to stay on top of 30 feet of snow and those of use that winter wheel in 4-8 feet of snow and for the majority of people who stay on snow packed roads or icy roads. If you want science and real world numbers, look at his whitepaper. The thing that alot of people don't look at is the weight of the vehicle and the required traction needed for the power. So comparing a baja racetruck to our tacoma is not apples and apples. There is alot that goes into it all. Although I like the look of the wider tires, the affects they have on truck as far as clearance and wear and tear on steering and suspension, I like the benefits of the skinny. So personally, I think I have the perfect compromise, went with 285/75R17's. Not super skinny, but not wide.

just a small comparison of the two, personally I'd prefer a 285/80r17 for the same width, but 35 in the 17" it just doesn't exist to my knowledge.

I don't have a discount tire local, i'm guessing you use them due to the warranty they offer for purchase.
