The only real problems diesels have emissions wise are NOx and particulates. The EPA requires that diesels have no higher emissions than gasoline engines an all test perameters.

All imports would have to meet EPA and DOT standards. The conversion to DOT standards is no less than $3500. As for the exhaust side of the house I couldn't tell you.

Maybe--Maybe not. If your base price for a DC is 28K your now looking at 31K and no support in the states....I guess it's a half glass full or half glass empty situation....

Give me a Taco with a solid front axle, 1KD-FTV(3.0L turbo diesel) and make it a 4x4.

Supposedly toyota is going to be offering a turbodiesel in the tundra soon. Don't know what the displacement, hp, or torque figures will be. Sure would be nice if they would seriously upgrade the available power choices in the tacoma. If nothing else shoehorn the 4.7 litre V8 into the tacoma; but an available 3 litre turbodiesel with the rest of the drivetrain properly geared to take advantage of the the td powercurve and torque output would be even better. Unfortunately don't hold your breath it will never happen. Same as making a solid front axle (4wd) available.

If you're looking at the mileage don't forget the conversion from Imperial gallons to US gallons makes it a little less. 39MPG Imperial is roughly the same as 33MPG US. And we have a different driving cycle for the EPA mileage numbers. I doubt the Tacoma has a start/stop system anywhere, but that also helps European cars get better mileage.

It's still better than the 2.7L 4 cylinder mileage, but not too much.

I'd rather see a Turbocharged DI ~2.4L gas engine with a little more power and a 6 speed auto. Should help mileage over the 2.7L, and have about the same power as the stock 4.0L.

Interesting comment about the 2.4 litre gasser having the same power as the 4 litre V6. If that was true, it would be a no-brainer for these tacomas. That way the power (at least equal to the current V6 4 litre) would be there but the gas mileage would be incredible also.

I am over in Saudi Arabia and have driven both the hilux 3.0 and the isuzu 3.0.

i have a feeling that izusu makes both engines but im not sure. they look very similar.

now 1st off:both are base model double cabs, 4x2.(they do not even have speakers in the back.)these are the base base model that the gov. bought and leased.
isuzu is auto toyota is also.

my take... they are nice. the auto has a hesitation when you go to floor it. (i understand that to a point)
the hilux is smooth shifting, quiet, peppy, but you can tell it only has 120hp...when you are in park and you blip the throttle the whole truck shakes, haha love the diesel.
the isuzu does the same as above, but it has buckets instead of a bench so props to it. the hilux blows better and colder air, ie blows more air..

i also drive a base nissan also. it sucks.

none of my opinions are biased to the toyota, (even though is is the best) nissan gave it its best and failed miserably. jk it is a good truck too, and it is a manuel so i am happy.

EDIT: can you import the engine only? or would you need to import the pieces? if you sent over 5 crates to the states and assembled in the states.

EURO(set up 5 crates with the engine pieces)>>>ship to US>>>>Assemble in garage...no emissions issues. works on paper. can you do it?

My best friend goes to Australia twice a year buying pre 1992 land cruisers, right hand drive and diesel is all he buys. We have been looking at the helix and my 07' Tacoma and it looks like the diesel with slip right in. He has imported a couple of new model Helix diesels crate engines for people to convert their older land cruisers.
His land cruiser he drives is an 84' RHD BJ 6cyl diesel, gets approx. 27 mpg.
I am currently looking at buying an helix engine for my truck, he can get good deals on crate engines.
I personally think that diesels here in smaller cars carry a stigma, due to ignorance on the consumers part. Most people associate them with big rigs, smelly, smoky, etc. Look at all of the other countries that have them in small vehicles, they do it for mpg and durability.

Military does have them in most of there heavy duty trucks and there are ways to make them have greater clearance. Not to mention they last considerably longer than an IFS setup with CV axles.

I read it is supposed to be a variant of the 4.5L V8 D4D offered in the Land Cruisers Europe. As for emissions issues Euro 4 emissions will comply with current standards but the issue will be with the new 2010.5 emissions standards in the US. Hopefully the Tacomas will be offered with a diesel option in the next year or so.

Brothers in toyota I'm hoping a toyota diesel within the next 24 months will be available. The CAFE requirements would almost certainly push them into doing this...although it wouldn't surprise me to see model year 2013 as the first production models come off the assy line. I think it takes almost 2 years to retool an assy line to make it happen plus they have to buy the engines at least that far in advance to get them in the numbers they will need...

If the tacoma had a diesel and a solid front axle I would say that they would be worth what toyota is asking for them now

Hmmm... A SFA Tacoma Hilux TRD Off Road Legit from Toyota would be nice... Price... I'd say maybe a bump of 3-4k would be reasonable...

Yesss sir! the TRD Hilux From Australia actually, or the European version.

Ive seen the european version on top gear make it up to a crater of a live volcano (as in still spewing out hot lava) and the hilux is the only pickup thats ever been to the north pole! :D
