Just odd that, on a very light duty truck, Toyota is still using drums. I can't think of any other vehicles that still have drums. Sure, they work just fine, but discs generally perform better in most circumstances and are really easy to service.

Not really from a manufacturers standpoint.
No real performance benefit for this platform.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It was intentional and they knew they'd get shit for it, but quoting the article
"towing is number 22 on why tacoma owners buy a tacoma" and that's where the heat dissipation helps more. When I tow I want stronger brakes as my trailer doesn't have it's own...but what I think would help more than that is a heavier truck.

    https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/08/2016-toyota-tacoma-still-rear-drum-brakes-heres-video/

I'm lazy and won't ever be doing the brakes on mine so I don't care either way. If I needed heavy duty brake action I wouldn't be driving a taco...which is what the designers predicted.

And articles like that is where they lose me... I can sort of accept the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality but when you try to justify it as a 'feature', it's sort of like me trying to justify why I still have a flip phone. It works just fine for what I do with it, but there are much better options out there.

That being said, when I had my Tacoma, the fact that it had drums in the back never bothered me. I never touched them in the 100k+ miles I drove the truck. The braking system, in general, I wasn't a fan of. The ABS kicked in way too soon and the brakes weren't overly strong from the factory but new pads and rotors made it much better. Drums wouldn't make me decide not to buy a truck, they work just fine, just interesting that they're hanging on to them on the Tacoma.

My 4wheel disc brakes and the ones on the wife's T4R stop both vehicles just fine:stirthepot:

I had 2 nearly identical cars. One with rear drums, one with rear discs. I can tell you the stopping power is much better with rear discs.

I'm skeptical that it was due just to having rear discs; the front brakes average 70-90% of the stopping power for a car, and drums aren't that much less effective than discs on the rear for the remaining 10-30% to have made much seat-of-your-pants difference. A good set of tires makes a bigger difference :notsure:

I never had a problem stopping with my rear drums even when I had this monstrosity fully loaded with no trailer brakes:

But I sure drove with caution!

I won't disagree with that, but the difference was noticeable to me. :notsure:

That happens all the time on the Pike westbound on the 495 exit. People just cut over last second to avoid sitting in 20 seconds of traffic.

    Good afternoon peeps,

Totally unrelated but I’ll put this out there to anyone local. We updated our dining room and I listed the “old” one. But I’ll give it to anyone here that could use it, or knows someone who could use it. It’s in really great shape. The table, 6 chairs and hutch. Let me know. I have to have it out by Saturday morning.

    Thanks
