Hah! We rented a 4WD Pathfinder years ago, to take the oldest son past the 5 mile sign on Padre National Seashore. The electrical failed on the way down. Had to trade it in on another rental. Then it rained, and the temperature dropped. We got 10 miles down before we stopped for a shell search. Spent a half hour before we were cold, wet, and miserable, and found no good shells either. I've had everything from an 88 Hyundai Excel, to F-150's, to multiple Prius, and multiple Taco down to the 5 mile sign. It's normally a mile to the next beach goer. And it beats breaking the drivetrain on some rock you never met! Beach sand variations are really just like snow variations. Except ice. No ice.

 

I took my old 72 ford 3/4 ton 4wd with Dana 40 and Dana 44 axles with 36” muddies down there about 20 miles in. Had a blast! I was young,traded it in for my last taco. Never had such a long drive home from anywhere in my life!

Going further for us was motivated because both "Little Shell Beach" and "Big Shell Beach" have migrated South over the years. Nowadays, you got to be there with the tide to generally get anything. Two years ago were there sans kids, and found more Starfish than ever! Problem! Many were actually alive, and had to get put back. We love it there. But last time down, there are new signs about immigrants, and the Rangers said that after 20 miles, they don't go anymore because of drug smugglers. That's what all the Coast Guard copters are there for now. We wave, and usually get waves back.
So, I will look for a couple.....
