I IG messaged them about the fairing when they were doing a Q&A and they said the fairing is being finalized now.

 

I anyone planning on installing a BedRug https://bedrug.com/bedrug-classic-bedliners with their GFC? I live in eastern Oregon and this was my plan to keep the dust from coming in through the accessory doors and tailgate.

Not much to it. It would be nice if there was someway to direct the air away from the gap between the the tent and the cab. Perhaps a heavy rubber flexible piece that would block the gap and funnel the air over the top but not damage the cab if the body is tweaked on the trail.

 

I've already installed the full Bedrug along with gaskets around the tailgate.

 

I too have a bed rug. We recently spent time in the desert in eastern Oregon and I believe the bedrug helped substantially with the dust. It also makes hanging out “downstairs” a lot more comfortable.

 

Two quick questions; first, what is the recommended base Tacoma (OR, Sport, SR5) to do some upgrades to (model year factors in I suppose) and second, how did it go from 310+ pages to 291? Did the number of posts per page increase? I just noticed the change today when refreshing to see what the latest buzz is about the GFC.

 

@wileydavis built up a sr5 v6 auto extended cab. He also helped build and design the GFC so that seems like a good base.

Personally I have a OR, its been good and I like the factory locker.

Idk why the pages changed, maybe posts were deleted or pictures deleted/failed.

Yeah, I'd be looking at a DCSB or DCLB due to family size and I don't have the experience/tools to do many upgrades (and not a rock crawler, etc), but wanted something that wouldn't require a big transition (E-locker, gear ratio change, etc) that would void any warranty.

 

I went with a 2017 SR5 V6 Auto for a few specific reasons:

1. I intended to build it as a long travel go-fast rig. That meant that I'd be throwing away all the suspension, so no need to pay for the factory upgrade there.
2. I didn't want the factory locker or off-road assist systems. I don't particularly care for crawl control, etc. And I want to be locked up in the rear while in 2wd or 4hi (hence the detroit auto locker I put in).
3. I actually started out with a 2.7 SR. I had a 2.7 1st gen and loved the thing. But the later gens got so heavy that the 2.7 was just too slow. I don't mind the new V6 auto combination too much. If you shift it manually in sport mode and pull the ABS fuses (not officially endorsed) it actually is fun to drive in the dirt and will let you left foot brake and slide the truck around.

I ordered in May, and my original build date was the middle October.

 

Definitely an idea to experiment with. We went with the wind skid-plate design primarily to reduce wind noise. The noise is noticeable in the 4runner tent mount because the front of the tent is right above your head. We tried air dams below the leading edge to keep air out from underneath but they didn't affect wind noise. Turns out that most of the noise comes from air passing in between the front bar and the extrusion. The Wind Skid deflects that and gets rid of almost all the excess wind noise. Haven't tested yet on a camper but we're getting a batch back from powder coating next week and I'll be doing some testing with my camper. Curious if the wind noise difference will be noticeable on the camper.Either way I like the way they look and the fact that it will make the bugs way easier to clean off the front

 

I forgot to add that i have a DCSB. We chose DC because of our 2 dogs and I chose SB because of wheelbase. Although, now that the GFC is a thing I wish I had the long bed but I plan to keep my SB until 500k miles or so.

 

I am interested to see the results, I am not sure if I will get it or not. I might see what the cab rack does and how that blends with the front of the camper before getting the fairing. Do you suspect the fairing would even be needed if you have the GFC cab rack in front of the camper? I am assuming yall are designing it to be similar height off the cab as the GFC.

 

It most likely wouldn't fit. The tent is only 1/2" above the top of the vehicle. We've actually tested both the ladders you linked. The second one you linked is the version we're going with, even though the yellow version is shown in one of the product photos. We add on our own bracket that hooks into the tent extrusion. Long term we'll design and build our own ladder most likely, but I've got a few other accessories to finish before then (lighting kit, tent lock, roof racks, antenna mount, 270 awning mounts, to name just a few).

Awesome feedback! I really like the Gen2/3 body style and think the Tundra Gen1 is most similar to the current batch of Tacomas and would be curious about how it compares as it seems like it has a larger engine/capacity with the V8 option with better HP. I’ll be looking out for a DCLB
