Nah, nowhere near totaled; that was my leased ‘17; don’t even think it went on car fax. I was heading into work on overnight shift doing about 35-37mph. Shit came out of nowhere. There was absolutely no way to avoid it. I’d post the video but I’m not sure what insurance would say...

every deer I've hit has gotten low to the ground as it peels out on the pavement trying to run faster. But also have had several jump over the hood years ago....
The only store bought front bumpers guards
that look deer proof (I've not looked much into this) are the ARB ones which are designed to hit kangaroos while driving fast. ones that make sense to me are the ones which have small enough space in front of radiator so a medium doe won't squeeze through when yer goin 75mph. Seems like their torsos can squeeze through small spots at high speed.

I am postulating.....personally I believe deer contemplating crossing a road at night, seem to jump at the chance when the road is lit up with headlights.....both deer I hit were at night running across inside my headlight beam. Thoughts??

A direct hit to a large animal at country road speeds 50+mph, will likely total the vehicle.

A steel (not aluminum) bumper will help prevent this damage. The bumper pretty much obliterates the deer.
My uncle always gets them on his diesels. Deer never win lol

True plus hitting deer=comp claim on your insurance and no impact to rates. Swerving and hitting a tree instead = Collision and an at fault claim on your record.

That deer is in bad shape. Hit by a car and a gun shot wound.

Its only illegal if you get caught. I’d take the animal home.
Unless you live in suburbia and are hanging it in your open garage in summer time cleaning it you aren’t going to get caught.

I've only had 5 close encounters with deer on the roads. Coyotes different story. Monday was my last one, ironic in that I was returning from a deer checkin station with my doe when a small buck started to walk out onto the road in front of me. Damn people for having apple trees on their front lawns. brakes and horn and he stopped. last fall shortly after getting my '17, came around a corner and there were 2 deer in the middle of the road, the wife hollered and i slammed the brakes. one jumped off teh road, the other stood there, musta been a dumb buck fawn. the winter before with my '13, a deer ran across the road and struck my rear bumper, shook the truck. I stopped and went back, all I found was a wet spot where it was when it struck me. At home i got he flashlight out and found the nose smudge on the bumper. Come to think of it, I've had more deer close encounters in 6 years with my Taco's then all my other vehicles in 38 years.

An arb definitely holds it's own against hood height animals. Moose or mature elk would be different. They'd deflect right over the hood and into the windshield in a head on situation due to their height. A corner impact with a 6-700# animal should be considered too. I hit a deer early one morning and kept going like it was a pothole. Once in the day light I took these pictures. No damage to the truck or even the slightest tweek to the arb. Just contoured my license plate to the bumper and left some hairy jerky bits stuck to the lower control arm.

Look into a plate bumper if you want to do as little damage as possible to the truck. I’ve hit and killed two. No damage to the truck. Both hits at around 45mph.
