Thanks for the explanation! I plan on using it for storage and don't really plan on ever finishing it, so might skip that step in order to save some cash, but I'll see what they have planned already.

    No problem.
My parents cellar isn't insulated or heated and it's usually around 50 during the winter, but since they just use it for storage it's not a problem (the freezer is cheaper to run and the pantry keeps food fresh longer at those temperature anyway). And the basement ceiling/downstairs floor is insulated so it's plenty warm in the rest of the house.

My basement is insulated on the outside. It stays around 62 all winter and I don't heat it. I think it's able to maintain that just from the heat bleeding off the boiler when it runs. It's nice because the floors in the house are never super cold. Best I can tell, 2/3 of it was finished at one time. He has wainscoting and sheetrock up on a lot of the walls, two closets, tile floors, and baseboard heat but he tore out some of the floor tiling and put shelves up over most of the walls. They had a lot of kids so it may have been another bedroom or two.

The last house's basement was not insulated, and it was usually in the high 40s or low 50s.

Just more for me to think about. Been googling it a bit and it seems like there are pro's and cons to doing it now or doing the inside later etc... I think I might leave it bare. This home is going to turn into a rental down the road and the basement will always be used as storage. If it was our final stop I would probably push to insulate inside and out.

Yeah, if you're living in it inside and out is definitely the way to go in this climate

The house was built in 1957, so I don't think it is original--not sure if they commonly did it then. I can see the 1" or so thick styrofoam type sheets on the outside, cut off level with the ground, but I don't know if they go all the way down to the bottom of the foundation or not..

Definitely a retrofit; they didn't insulate anything with styrofoam in the 50's

On my way back to lia to pick up my truck. They say it has failed the frame inspection and within a few days they will have an approval from Toyota and will get parts on order as soon as possible.

That's what I figured. I think he did significant additions/renovations twice. The garage, addition, and pergola were all added in the mid 70s. He did siding, windows, the garage doors, well pump, propane fireplace insert and the roof in 2007. It may have been done at the same time as one of them.

Starting to notice some stuff that was very recent, too. Pressure tank and all of the PVC plumbing are dated 2014, which would have been just after the original owners died and it was sold to the guy before me.

    D'oh.
Make sure you push them for a Tacoma for a loaner; don't let them stick you with a 2 door Yaris

Or he'll be like me. Bring in an 8 month old F150 with under 10K for warranty work and get a gumdrop for a loaner!

I've only done 2 oil changes with Banks Chevy/GMC but they've let me take a Colorado both times. Salesman lets me drive his demo whenever I am there.

Ouch... Who'd you piss off at that dealership? If it's only a couple hours, or even a day, I'm fine with whatever they give me. I've had a Focus a couple times for half a day. If it's going to be an extended duration, I push for something as good or better than I bought. Toyota in Dedham gave me a brand new TRD Sport for the few times mine was in for recall or warranty work. It was nice!

How do you like the Colorado? I thought they were very akward getting in and out of, but once you were in, it seemed comfy. Never got to do anything more than sit in them though. I really want to drive one of the new diesel models some day. No intention of buying one, just want to drive it.
