Looking to buy. What do you guys think?

Hey everyone as the title says I’m looking to buy this truck in the Northeast. It’s a 2014 access cab v6 4x4 TRD Sport in white with 24k miles. Asking price is 24,990 and I got them down to 24,500 before I walked away. It’s stock everywhere with new tires and brakes. Also has custom heated leather seats.

Do you guys think this a reasonable price? According to kbb, nada, car gurus it’s saying the fair market value is 25k+.

I’m attaching some photos of the undercarriage because it’s a little rustier than I expected given its age. Do you guys think this amount of rust is alarming? I did knock around the frame to listen for soft spots but didn’t hear anything. Looks like surface rust to me.

What’s some good tips for inhibiting this rust if I decide to buy this truck?

Edit: should have mentioned it’s certified prep Wednesday and comes with 1 year bumper to bumper and maintenance and 7/100k power train

I personally haven't had to deal with this so I don't know the specific requirements, but I wonder if this truck would qualify for a frame replacement from Toyota.

Some sections of that frame don't look too far from having a hole...

 

For that kind of money you can buy a DCAB keep looking.

 

That's quite a bit of rust for a 4 year old vehicle. I'd probably keep looking myself

 

Alot of that rust is surface rust but some of it is not.
My 2012 has less than that and has sat outside in NE ohio it's entire life.
The transfer case picture shows a TON of rust that has already started on the Cab body around the grommets.
The the E-coat on the body has been penetrated and is allowing metal to oxidize, there is no stopping it now.
I would bump your mileage criteria up to 40-50,000 miles and find a body/frame that's in better shape.
If you are set on this one, ask for a car-fax on that thing.
That truck either lived on the beach or took a few swims.
Rust should not be propagating from the grommets unless the grommet was holding water. (IE water in interior, or water up to bottom of cab)

 

No bueno on the rust.... you should have told them to replace the frame before you buy it

What if I negotiate a rust inhibitor/coating be added? Do those things help?

All you'd be doing is putting a band-aid on a cancerous problem.

Thing about oxidation is that it can continue sight unseen. They either replace the frame or you walk.

 

Walk. Lots of other stuff looks problematic. This truck will turn into a Hole you throw money in...

 

OP not sure where you are but you may consider buying a California Truck or one from a drier climate that's close to you.

 

Rekon why new tires & new brakes with only 24K miles, my opinion, should be maybe 1/2 way to being replaced. Rust this bad within first 4 yrs. will get waaaay worse in next 4 yrs. If this is a dealer, in my part of the country, you should be able to negotiate way more than $400 on a $25,000 truck. Just my opinion.

 

How does the price compare to KBB?

Leather seats dont change the value abd neither does new tires and brakes. The truck shouldn’t have needed either with only 24k.
The new brakes creep me out. What the heck happened to the first set?

Is this a dealer or private sale?


The rust doesn’t bother me. Thats what my ‘13 looks like. If you live in the rust belt your frame is going to rust out and it will need to be replaced. Just accept that fact and move on. If rust scares you that bad don’t buy a Tacoma. It is an inevitable problem with these trucks.

No way!! I'm in the northeast as well and I bought my '15 DCSB (non-TRD tho) for 25k with 14k miles on it. And I spent a good 30min underneath the thing before I bought it, not a speck of rust.

The deal you listed above is not a good one.

EDIT: remember, it's a toyota, jack up your acceptable mileage window. Find a rust free truck with 50 or 60k on it and it'll go for another 200k miles.

 

Sheet metal underneath is rusting already. Owner was not proactively maintaining the underside in the winter. Possible flood vehicle? My 09 is rustfree and I live in the northeast!
