I am serious with this question...not being snarky. What do you consider a regular tent? I consider my backpacking tent "regular" and a ton of fun for the purpose it serves.

Some people consider a $40 6 man aluminium pole tent with a Thanksgiving day float size air mattress "regular." I saw these type of arguments when I started backing packing...you have these ultralight pricks that throw disdain on any pack that weighs over 19 pounds loaded. Those same assholes were asking to borrow shit from me on my section hike of the AT...Toilet paper is my favourite example...Hell no you cannot have my shit tickets.

My point is that part of the fun and pain is figuring out what works best for what you want to do. You get to learn tips and tricks from the experience. My budget has often dictated what I consider regular and yes that has changed as I have gotten older. You can bet your ass when I travel for MTB races I will be snoozing in the RTT vs my "regular" tent but if some buddies call for some section hiking I will not be leapfrogging so I can sleep in the RTT.

If you are under the stars away from light pollution just be thankful. I will never forget my daughter saying while camping in the Smokies "Oh my gosh Dad...have you ever seen so many stars?" We have "regular" tent trip planned for Dry Tortugas in February and I cannot wait to see that blow her mind.

Coleman Instant Tent... they are great for easy up and easy down... and tall enough for a queen air bed and you can stand up in them, too.

It'll be tight and there won't be much room for other stuff outside of the space on the floor behind the front seats, but I think it'll go with some... creative finesse.

They make them. Go forth, get bed tent and... go do outside!

What, David? It rains in central Baja about once every 10 years. I did that in Imperial County and Baja, but the monsoon season in the SW would, let's say mitigate against that. I do miss that freedom though.

yeah, I've got 4 of them for different occaisions. Great thing is, if you add them up, I've still spent less than a RTT.

Cool. Looks like a spot I stayed once on the other side of the Sea of Cortez in northwest Sonora.

LOL... rain is just water, it won't hurt you! You will see I do have a plastic tarp over my sleeping bag in back of my Tacoma as there is heavy dew before sunrise in that desert... This is on Shell Island, a barrier island beach just south of Percebu (about 20 miles from San Felipe). See more of Shell Island: http://vivabaja.com/914/

I would kinda have to disagree with ya a little bit. Sure they are a hot item for people that are a "Must Have" for their overland rig. However, if used properly they are really, really handy. If I had a base camp where I come back to for 2 or 3 nights, not worth it at all. If I'm moving around, my RTT is fantastic. On my 2.5 week road trip a few weeks ago, I would poke fun of my buddy because he would have to take 30 minutes pitching his tent in the dark and tear it down every single morning while he was tired. Also, while I was already asleep or had breakfast in me waiting on him poking fun. If you're not going to be in the same spot continuously, my $700 RTT has been a time and energy saver. Have had it in high winds, rain, etc. If it's late and I'm not worrying about taking a cool instagram photo of it with the windows up, its up and ready to climb in to sleep as quick as I take the Velcro off and pull the ladder down.

I had the same experience with my RTT. After reading so many negative comments about RTTs on various forums mainly from people that have never used one and from my own bias prior to buying one, I think from the outside they just look like a hassle. The reality is exactly the opposite. I am far from a glamper, and not into "new" fads, but my RTT has been a game changer for me. I think it boils down to are you the type of person that dosent mind completely unpacking your truck bed to setup camp, or rather do some minor acrobatics and unfold your RTT. I was also biased against a offroad trailer with a RTT on it, but now I am going to try it as well since the RTT on my rig ended up such a good experience that I almost missed due to letting haters sway my opinions.

I am even thinking about mounting it to my crawler's tube bed for multiday rock crawling trips.
