Yup..a lot of people I grew up with didn't get that lesson, and my sister was never much for having to work for things. Wasn't always fun as a kid but now in my 40s I see those people who still are not self sufficient.

I'm in a position where retirement will hit my house in the next few years..my wife is 57. In a perfect world we can move south and have no mortgage..cost of living is way high in Mass.

Good day in the market. (Sarcasm) I've been hoping for a correction. I haven't checked balances, but I'm sure things went South by $20k.

Graduated with double major in accountancy and finance debt free earlier this year (high gpa, lots of scholarships and worked full time while in school). Just finished the CPA exam. Running my own business at 23.

I’ll hustle till I die I don’t care, I want to make enough money to give my family anything they want.

    At 32.

Went stir crazy. Then went back to work as Executive Director. I’ll probably work until my wife retires. Then we’ll go see all the cool TW hot spots in all the states. Mountains, trout, snow caps, fall foliage, waterfalls, red woods, all those cool places everyone post pics of! :woot:

I might be reading too much into a simple turn of phrase but as stated that sounds like a good way to completely fuck over your family...

Pretty much. Most companies aren't doing pensions anymore. Social security will likely be dried up by the time I qualify.

One reason I am still where I am..18 years of service and my company provides a pension I don't pay into on top of a 401K with a decent match.

That exam is no joke. Wife got hers last year. Glad she had her GI Bill. Only came out of pocket about $4K for her to get a masters degree in accounting.

Pensions and retirement sponsored plans at the power company. That's why I want to work on getting hired over. Plus the power company operates out of 4 different states so huge potential to move and promotion.

    Plus 2 weeks vacation starting, 3 after 5 year, 4 after 10, and 5 after 15

The Home Depot Military Discount Policy extends to immediate family of all active duty and retired military personnel.

Sure. Doesn’t mean it’s right to take a discount for something you didn’t do.

    I’m not...
    I’m following the store policy.

Write HD and have them remove the immediate family portion.

I personally don’t agree with that perspective. Taking myself out of the equation... immediate family members sacrifice too.
Wives and husbands take care of family alone for a year to 18 months at a time (sometime for years on end).
Spouses go without careers to follow theirs around the world.
Kids go to new schools every single year for 12 years.
    Spouses become widows.
    Kids lose parents.

Free country (wonder why?). Home Depot can set their own policies on how to say thank you.

It’s not my place my to say you can’t take advantage of the store’s discount policy or to ask the store to change their policy. It’s just my personal opinion that a discount for military service should only be accepted by a service member, not a grown child, regardless if the store offers it to the family as a whole.

Damn. Im 54 and got 35yrs in at my company. 8 yrs ago they froze pension plan with no grandfathering for us older guys. medical has become a cataserphy plan thats expensive and really only decent if you are near death. 401 K match is a thing of the past. ill work forever and hope i die in their fkn plant so they got to move me. i plan to be the biggest pain in there ass till then. i still give 100% and have pride in my work but feel they riped me off!! sorry for the vent, just saw this thread:hattip:

That sucks, sorry to hear. This is my concern with pension plans and the like these days. 401k has lots of problems but at least it is portable so it isn’t going to keep you in one place where you are unhappy. I’ve known a bunch of folks with lots of years of service in a pension plan and then it starts to get worse but still they have enough vested it doesn’t make sense to walk away either. Sucky situation.
