Seen it, Ken Burns can tell the story better than anyone I have seen. The National Parks, The Civil War, he is an American treasure.

To this day you don’t see many non Big 3 cars in the Detroit Metro area. I moved away over forty years ago and when I visit I notice it.

I'll never forget the buzz when one of the older guys in my neighborhood came rolling up in a Japanese car while the 79 gas crisis was in full swing.

Don't remember the make/ model, but when he reported his mpg's, I could see lots of people mulling it over.

Seems like the great mileage opened the door, and the quality sealed the deal.

Anyone not around during that time will miss the significance- I remember the quality of the big three being at probably the lowest, and "planned obsolescence" was something people were aware of.

Once the Japanese cars started selling, Detroit had to wake up and start putting out a better product.

All from my point of view, of course.

Japanese cars came to America in the '60's. That had to be tough for lots of people to swallow. I really don't remember any older people saying that much negative about it though.
