Mmmm. That paraffin wax is my favorite part. Like dipping a foot in lava.

So, quick question for you guys.

If your boss asked you to pick up/drop off customers alone at their home multiple times a week(and it was not part of your job as explained to you when hired)would you be irritated about it? When I was hired our porter would be doing this as part of his responsibility and now it has shifted to me as we have had several porters since then.

I don't get paid gas money(they buy us lunch every day but then we work through lunch)and I'm really beginning to wonder if this is something I should be worried about. There is the potential for me to be injured transporting these people who are for all purposes strangers both in car wrecks or if one of them turns out to be a psycho. Also, most of them feel it's their right to comment on my vehicle or myself and not always nicely so it is often an awkward ride.

TLDR - my boss is using me as a free shuttle service for his customers without compensation and I wasn't told when I was hired that I would be expected to do this. Thoughts?

No no no no no. If this is for work, it should be done using a work vehicle and more importantly WORK INSURANCE.

Your boss is setting you up for financial liability that shouldn’t be your responsibility.

Don’t do it unless you’re listed on the bond/insurance policy and a company vehicle is used.

You could nip it in the bud and stay in good graces by saying while renewing your car insurance you happened to bring this situation up and your agent said you would not be covered if there was an accident while you're using your own vehicle for work. Add that you don't mind doing this activity but under those circumstances unless he wants to pay for your insurance you'll have to stop the practice or use a company vehicle.

Ok, so this is the more diplomatic answer, but the same sentiment.

My work requires me to be PC and diplomatic. Because they are becoming more and more transparent and because I have been here 25 years when they used to be as opaque as lead, I now have a lot of experience being pissed off and complaining nicely. :D

They don't have a policy covering us while driving customer vehicles as far as I know. I'm not sure how to really verify that.

My assumption that we aren't covered is based on the fact that my boyfriend works at a dealership collision center and they were given insurance cards for when they have to be in customers cars.

The liability is really my concern over everything else as I generally carry in my vehicle so I could defend my if necessary. BUT what about the days I don't? Obviously I'm in a business where I literally deal with wrecked cars every day so I was wondering about what liability I had if a customer is with me and we get hit. If they're injured am I responsible? Does my insurance cover me at that point? Does my boss have to pay? Medical Bill's, lawyers fees, etc doesn't seem like it would be worth it.

It's one of those things where if I get hit obviously they would could probably care of the vehicle damage as we are a collision center, but I dont want to possibly be out of pocket on medical bills for myself or the passengers I have to carry.

The other thing is I often end up doing this while my direct boss who is the owners daughter and half owner herself is sitting in her office not busy.

Just frustrating and I'm not sure on legal liability and how I'm going to approach this with my boss as he has a tendency to over react.

Kelly, your boss sounds like he’s cutting corners. Please don’t do it anymore unless you KNOW you’re covered.

When I last had to drive as part of my job, my vehicle was covered under company insurance when I was performing work business. When I wasn’t, then my insurance covered me. This was part of my employment contract and documented with HR. No issues.

I’m now seriously worried for you, because in an accident not only can the customer go after your employer they can go after YOU. Cover your keister. Call your insurance company and get their take on this, because then it’s two against one when you talk to your boss.

We only want the best for you here. Good luck!

I’ve had deliveries at the end of the day that fit in my backseat. Boss wouldn’t let me use my truck because of liability reasons. He would rather have me drive a freightliner that’s 12 feet tall through a neighborhood with trees trimmed at 9 feet. Keeps the employees safe.

Yall don't have any small flatbeds for deliveries, seems inefficient using a tractor trailer rig for these small loads.
