Pretty sure you can turn the map light on without the ignition on...

wait, I gotcha, I had to go back and read that part...

If you really want to use it with the ignition off, then I'd pull a hot wire up from under the dash or the battery.

That said, that's a LOT more work for not much gain.

Yup, I just ended up using the wire from the map lights, since I usually wont be having to close the garage unless I'm going somewhere, which means the truck would be on, lol. What I found weird was, if you turn on the map lights (with the truck off) the homelink module has power but when I press the button, the light is solid, and the garage door doesn't open or close. When the truck is on however, and I press the button the homelink light flashes, and the garage door will open or close. Weird.

I thought about this actually, and that is a very good point. Also I can lock my garage at night so that only the main button on the inside will open it. But that is a very good point about breaking into the truck.

Just did this mod on my second gen. Yes, I could've got a mirror with homelink I guess but this was cheaper and easier.

    Thanks OP!

I figured if I was going to do a homelink and all the wiring anyways I may as well do the mirror swap. Now I have 3 homelink buttons, outside temp gauge, compass, auto dimmer mirror from rear headlights.

My second gen already had the compass and temp in the overhead console (strangely mine had always just worked though many people have theirs fail), my mirror is already auto dimming and has the rearview camera feed in it. So the only thing I was missing was the homelink.

I wired it straight to the dome light. Two wires and I was lazy and just used the scotch lock style wire taps. The wires are constant hot so it works when the truck is off.

I'm really pleased with it. The mirror would probably be the better option for a first gen though if you didn't already have those options.

Yup, 1st gen doesn’t have ANY of those options
