Wondering if the same trick works for Tacos:

I saw this video on the FJ Crusier:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GT8E7BGYzns&feature=related

Basically for FJs, they follow these rules:

Not all FJ's come with the locker.
Not all FJ's come with atrac.
All FJ's that have the locker have everything for atrac except the switch.
All FJ's with atrac have the locker.

So this is probably unlikely, but has anyone tried the same on a pre-2009 Taco?

I would strongly encourage you to reach out to the dealer network and ask someone experienced there.

My opinion which could be wrong is that it's not possible to add A-TRAC to the Tacoma without serous modifications to the truck. Why? Because A-TRAC requires a hydraulic brake booster and a skid control ECU which is programmed to perform with the A-TRAC feature.

If someone took the time to compare part numbers between the 2008 and 2009 models and came to the conclusion that it's the same part for the skid control ECU, that would be a very telling sign that the A-TRAC feature may be there all along...

But one thing is clear. If your truck had the vacuum brake booster, it will not work. Sea attached PDF for clarification.

Tacoma 2008 and earlier models had the hydraulic brake booster as optional equipment if the truck came equipped with VSC/HAC/DAC. It may be possible to replace the skid control ECU with a more updated one but it may be more complicated than that.

When I look at the wiring diagram for a 2009 it is very obvious that there are many complex systems which interface to achieve the desired effect for the traction systems. If anyone of those supplementary systems are not there, then its not going to work. For example: does your truck have an A-TRAC indicator lamp in the dash combination meter? No? Well then you'll have to replace that too.

Look at the attached diagram for a detailed understanding.

ATRAC will only function correctly with the newer style wheelspeed sensor. So the short answer is no, it will not work on any Tacomas. The TRAC mod will work on 2009+. The VSC ECU pre 09 is also different, and the truck is not pre-wired. I could go on and on. Short answer, doesn't work. The above was however inspiration for the TRAC mod.

With the money I'd lose, I might as well install a front locker.

Lose? Don't be so sure... I traded my 2005 with 102,000 miles for the new 2010 with nothing else down and only $20/ month increase in my lease payment. Tacomas hold their value and are in demand.

The wiring is different on the OR's. But it doesn't matter, the other hardware is not present....
