The SKINNY on skinny tires

Just got back from getting my new skinny BFGs. Really happy with the look and ride. No noticeable power difference even over two high mountain passes, it will be interesting to check fuel economy on the first tank and how they perform in tomorrow’s snow storm.

I have 285s on a 4cyl and noticed a slight loss in power but an uptick in mpg, even though they are E rated, on the highway...was getting 21 hwy on 245s now regularly getting 22-23 hwy...I attribute that in part to the fact that the larger tires dropped my rpms by 2-300... interested to see how you do...ran mine at 35psi for a while..did a chalk test, and have been running them at 45 now...slightly stiffer but better mpg and nice and easy to turn the steering wheel

Thanks that’s good info for comparison. I was running KOs in 245 and really liked them but really wanted to try 235s. My 70 mile drive home was pretty varied from city streets, two lane highway and interstate with a pass over 10k on the latter two, so pretty decent climbs. It drove much the same aside from the nice smooth feel of new tires. My true test will this week of commuting to work as it involves pretty decent distance with long, steep climbs and some expected snow, likely needing 4wd in the early part of the week. I am hoping that my commute economy of 19.5-20 mpg will remain close.

I will probably play with the pressure too in the coming months. I’m not familiar with the chalk test, but have heard it mentioned on here a fair bit so I probably should research and complete one.

 

4wd might affect the mpg but other than that I don't think you will see a huge loss (depends on how you drive too)...take the chalk test with a grain of salt....the first time I did one my conclusion was that I should run my tires at 30psi because that would get me the best tire to road contact and even wear...30 psi on tires that max at like 80 is feels almost aired down...and I had more road noise...I just did a 10k cross country trip this summer and ran them at 45 and they are wearing great...If you have a bunch of snow you might want to run them a tad lower in the winter...we haven't gotten hit with the white stuff here in the northeast yet...but it'll happen im sure!

 

I spend a good portion of the winter in 4wd, usually at a 2mpg loss. Hopefully in this size it will be similar or better.

I typically ran my 245s at 38 in the winter an 42-45 in the summer with good results. A bit more road noise at 38 but not too bad. Will have to find the sweet spot this winter.

 

Just me talking out-loud.

Looking at the 255/80r17 Toyo AT2 to put on some 17x8.5 SCS Ray 10's. I like that they don't weigh as much as the other tall/skinny options(they actually are the same weight as the other tire I'm looking at 285/70r17 BFG AT KO2 C-Load @ 50lbs)

Really don't need a MT for the trails I'll be driving (Colorado) and this is still a daily driver. I'm hoping I can get away with setting the Icon's at 2" for clearance without a CMC.

4.88 gears and OV tune are also on the mod list, tune might be happening later this month.

 

Cooper st maxx 255/85r16. Tough tire that proved itself well this summer but they are heavy AF. Fits no rub on 2-2.5” lift.

If by Arizona you mean Central Texas then yes.

 

I am going to go with the LT235/85 R16. The KO2 or the Cooper AT3LT. This thread has been great!
