Yeah, that is exactly the characteristic that bothers me the most. If the truck would just hold 4th gear longer I'd be happy. In the 35ish mph dead pedal situation I switch from D over to S which automatically finds 4th and I hold it on my own. It seems like a very simple problem that could be fixed with software.

Did you unplug your battery for a while so the engine would be forced to relearn?

Has anyone confirmed that this works?

A few pages ago I thought I saw someone say that it does not

this only clear the "short term learning" but not the "long term learning". It has helped for a couple hundred miles or so but then its quickly back to crap. I have been using techstream to clear the "long term learning" whenever the truck starts driving like crap again, usually every 5k. Once i clear the learning it immediately starts driving perfectly. Its funny, after every TSB people report ITS FIXED, ITS FIXED! The reason they say that is because the learning got cleared during reflash and the truck then drives great. It takes about 1500k or so to see if the TSB actually stuck. So never trust reports right after a TSB. So far NONE of the TSBs has fixed the major issue with these trucks. If only there was some way to completely disable the learning, that would fix all the issues for me.

    Good info.

Do you need to keep an ongoion techstream subscription to do this?

Today, I brought my truck to Novato Toyota for the 10,000 miles service. I asked the service adviser about the TSB update. He said unless the problem can be replicated, they won’t be able to do it. He then reviewed my service history and told me that Marin Toyota did not get paid for the time they spent trying to replicate the problem. He said if I had brought my truck to Freeman Toyota (where I had purchased my truck), they would have done it with no questions asked. I told him how much would it cost to do the update. He told me $77. I told him I would have paid that at Marin Toyota instead of sitting there for nothing for almost 3 hours. I will provide an update when I drive it to work tomorrow.

Bought my truck at Freeman and went in last week for the my 10k. I asked the service lady on the phone when I made my appt about the TSB, she said I would have to talk to y service representative the day of any appt. I told my service representative that the truck stumbles especially when I’m in Tahoe and I would like them to update it because I understand there is a new TSB. He said he didn’t understand and they were way too busy, he then wanted to schedule another appt where they keep the truck for the day and try to see if they could find anything g wrong with. I made the appt reluctantly. A few days later I received a survey from a freeman and I gave them terrible reviews and proceeded to cancel my appt. Just update the truck, it would literally take them maybe 10 minutes and the customer would then be happy. Freeman is short on staff and overbooked. I got a really good deal on my truck but their service leaves things to be desired. I’ve heard Hansel will do the TSB so I’m gonna look into them. Long story short, Freeman won’t do it.

    It's also just his opinion.

I've had a TSB for shift flair - fixed
TSB for hesitation on accelaration - fixed
TSB for rear diff whine - fixed.

Not everyone has been as fortunate, but to say they haven't worked on any of the major issues is false.

99% of the people complaining that the TSB's have never worked, never had the actual problem the TSB is designed to address in the first place. Clearly they have some problem, but its just not what the TSB is for. Specifically the last 2 are for a hesitation and a surge from 40-50. If you have one of those 2 issues, get it. Otherwise just disconnect your battery.

Last Wednesday, I took my truck into City Toyota in Colma with an 8am appointment I made the day before. After a few bad customer service interactions with the Service Advisor raising his voice at me, the Service Foreman agreed to check the truck out to make sure it's up to code. I had to flag down someone from the office named Arleigh (incidentally, the person who does damage control on Yelp :p) because I've been waiting for 20 for someone to process me. Finally they took my info and received my truck. That same day before they closed, they called and said the Foreman has yet to look at it.

Thursday afternoon rolled around and they told me the Foreman is having a hard time communicating with the truck's computer and started making assertions that my aftermarket stereo might be interfering, but the Foreman will keep trying. He mentioned something that the Foreman doesn't normally work on Fridays but will come in to work on it. Friday afternoon, no phone call. So I called them instead and the service advisor isn't in but the person I talked to says my truck is still being worked on...

The bad thing is, I am assuming they are just sitting on my truck to find a reason to charge me or Toyota more money. I am sure more than one person is qualified to update an ECM or even diagnose it. The only positive here is that good thing my truck is not my DD. If I still get bull crap by Monday afternoon, I am reaching out to a friend who knows the owner personally and/or reach out to Corp.

    On a somewhat related note:
I checked out the Yelp reviews on City Toyota and it is a 3 out of 5. A lot of horrible stories about sales and mostly service department. Ugh. I wonder if I am better off going to where I bought the truck - in Stockton. :/

I’m just gonna assume the platform still has unresolved defects. Will they be resolved by the 2020 model year? God I hope so.

Nope, they won’t change anything. Either buy one or find something else to drive.

I'm about 50 miles in with my 2018 after this TSB. Soooooo, before the TSB I definitely adapted to the truck's quirks. I got so used to them, that they didn't bother me. Weird hesitation here and there, some weird shifts, wavy throttle response.

Now with the TSB, the truck just has slightly different quirks. The truck acceleration at wot still feels wavy and non-linear though it doesn't feel bad. Shifts are still misplaced and there is still some general roughness to the throttle and shifting, though not undrivable by any stretch.

I don't think it's better, I just think the quirks and personality changed, not for the better or the worst- just different. Now I will just adapt to the newer quirks and keep on trucking.

Got my 10k service done Friday along with TSB. Report showed hesitation on first acceleration at WOT. Covered by TSB, reflashed ECU per TSB...

Chirped the tires in the first 3 gears leaving dealership.
