Years ago I disconnected the wire going to the door button to stop the beep. It stopped the beep, but also caused the dome light to not come on when the door was opened, and it also disabled the beeper warning that you left the headlights on. I lived with these inconveniences because it was better than that annoying beeper. Well I just did this mod, and reconnected the wire to the door button. Much better, no dinger when you open the door with the key in the ignition, but the light comes on when I open the door, and it even warns me if I left the lights on. Thanks again Tacomaworld.

Yeah, I guess it is silly of me to want a buzzer that reminds me the keys are in the ignition yet be able to have the door open with no buzzer since it's the same function. A long time ago, well the '90s, some cars had a feature that the radio would play for 10-15 minutes after taking out keys but I think it killed when you open the door. Guess I'm stuck......my perfect fix would just disable the buzzer when the key is in ACC. but work when off.

Unplugged that sucker today! And as previously stated, I unplugged that piezo so no more beep every time I lock & unlock my truck! My head lights shut off as soon as I take the key out of the ignition. So I'm not sure what you're talking about not knowing if you leave your lights on or not by the buzzer.

My '00 doesn't turn off the headlights auto. plus i kind of like being reminded of the keys. I don't always choose to remove them.

I think it's part of the 01-04 change including those courtesy lights. we have a "ding" noise when we leave our keys in but our lights will turn off when the door is opened after turning the truck off and pulling the keys.

There might have been an option for the 98-99 for one of the packages but I don't think so

Today, I heard a lady's old beat up VW Golf start playing Dixie. Me and another stranger started looking around trying to figure where it was coming from. The lady smiled and said that's the sound her car makes when she leaves the key in the ignition.

That got me thinking. Why not replace the annoying buzzer with a sound that is more pleasant? After a lot of searching, I find myself on this thread with no apparent options. Seems everyone just wanted to disable the buzzer instead of changing it. So my question is: is it possible to swap out the buzzer with some sort of novelty replacement buzzer?

ingenuity goes a long way. anything is possible, it's just a constant power source to the buzzer so if you replaced it with a module that plays music i would think it works?

It's attached to the board though, so you'd need to have some decent soldering skills.

I disabled the buzzer today and it didn't take long. Here's what to do:
    1. use butterknife covered with cloth to pry open bottom of left air vent, closest to driver door. The air vent is part of the speedometer console.
    2. make sure steering wheel is all the way down and left blinker is on (to avoid unnecessary wrangling of console outer trim).
    3. part of the radio console may also loosen. This is also easily snapped back in.
    4. use phillips screw driver to open 4x screws at 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. Use finger to guide them out so they don't fall down.
    5. take speedometer off and tilt face down.
    6. on left hand side is the buzzer... it even looks like one, round silver showing underneath the holes drilled in the black plastic.
    7. use sharp box cutter to cut open between the holes. The plastic is thin and easy to cut. There are 2 layers of plastic to cut through to see the silver underneath.
    8. use a tube of latex caulking, place in hole that you cut and slowly squeeze till these cavities are filled between silver and black surface.
    9. let it dry a bit and replace the items above.
    10. enjoy -- not sweet sweet silence -- but a very dimmed down buzzer sound... barely audible.

    Thanks for posting this.
Not having a (functioning?) door buzzer in my Miata for over a decade, the inability to sit in my truck, doors open, & radio playing during mu son’s baseball practice was annoying me.
    Doors open allow airflow.

On my 90, the plastic plug was blue & only had 2 wires. Just so those with it know.

I like the buzzer as it helps me remember for sure. The only thing i wish i could change is when the key is in ACC and door open for music it would stop ringing. It does when you turn the ign to ON after a few seconds, but in ACC its constant.

EDIT: Yes I could just leave it on "ON" when listening to music but it just wastes battery for no reason when you could have it just on ACC and run the radio if the damn buzzer was gone.

My truck came with a plastic key that I keep in my wallet just in case I lock the keys inside. So not having that annoying buzzer wouldn’t bother me a bit

Ok just tried the disconnect wire clip mod. There seems to be variations through all the first gen years so this is what happens with my 03 prerunner ext cab trd. All buzzer sound stops. Overhead light still comes on when door opens. Power windows and locks work. Key in ignition, open door, lock prevention DISABLED. As far as the buzzer sounding for headlights on, as far as I can tell it does not have that function only key in ignition buzzer....with this truck when the key is in the ON position(with or without engine running) and the lights are on, when you turn the key to the ACC or LOCK position, the lights turn off automatically. The only way I could accidentally leave my lights on is if I turned the lights on with no key in the ignition or in the ACC position. Hope that wasn't confsuing. I have only locked my keys in this truck once in 15 years....so knock on wood...I'm gonna keep the mod and hope I don't make the mistake. See you never buzzer sound.

Ok...moved on to my 02 DC prerunner trd. Everything worked out the same as far as the mod......EXCEPT....this truck makes the buzzer sound when you put the key into the on position when you are about to start the truck. Same buzzer but different speed of buzz. 5 buzzes at a slower cadence than the key in ignition buzz. This sound did NOT go away with the mod. Anyone out there know how to get rid of the ON position buzz???? Wakes my baby up everytime we need to adjust the windows while he's taking a nap at the beach.
