iMovie is a good starting point. Final Cut is really good too, and pricey.

Vegas Studio is decent. I used to use Pinnacle Studio back in the day, but i guess their new stuff is pretty good.

Adobe Premiere is my current favorite.

I use Pinnacle Studio 14. Pretty easy to learn and fairly easy to use.

Windows Movie Maker isnt that bad. Not sure what kind of output the flip uses, I have the kodak playsport and it exports in .mov format and movie maker wont read it, so i had to switch to Pinnacle.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I had the same issue with my Kodak. I found a free convertor at cdnet.com that works wonders.

Adobe Premiere is the way to go if you have the money or are comfortable going through the torrent process.

I just finished making my first video using IMovie on Mac.
It was very easy and came out looking very professional.
If I can do it, anyone can!

Pinacle Studio is a great non-break-the-bank personnal video editing software suite. I've been using it since it was buggy...I record my boys wrestling, football, and rugby with it... I don't use a lot of it's capabilities... You can check out some of my videos here http://www.youtube.com/user/dwsull1

The rugby one is focused on my big boy DSully72 (in taco world)...
