No shit? Just looked it up and found the raffle. Looks like he took possession on 9/15...

Slightly more than that. The "value" was listed as $45,000 for the raffle, so he'd have income tax on that amount, so anywhere from $5,000 to $18,000 depending on his tax bracket.

How does that work if you got no money to your name but win the truck?
You HAVE to sell it? Or tax deferral until you sell?

Or part it out and wreck it haha

or refinance it or the likes. He pry wouldn't have to pay taxes until next year. It would be interesting if he also had to pay sales tax since it was won when he registered it?

Haha the problems sometimes of winning something. I guess its a good problem to have most of the time.

They actually have that problem a lot when people win shit on game shows. They win a boat or something and literally cant afford to take possession.

It would be part of his 2018 "income", so the taxes would be filed with his 2018 return. But the government doesn't like to wait for its cut, so the winner would probably have to make an estimated tax payment at the time of collecting the prize or face penalties and interest. I think the gov assumes at least 30% on winnings, then you get some back when you file.

As for the sales tax, he would have to pay Use Tax at the time of registering. Since it was a raffle with a stated value, he probably got charged 10.3% on the $45,000, so there goes another $4,635. Plus he'd have RTA taxes and other licensing fees. Not sure how RTA handles customized vehicles, but plan at least another $400 to register it.

So the winner is looking at a minimum of $10,000 in taxes (lowest tax bracket plus Use Tax/licensing). But his likely "out of pocket" right now is/was closer to $19,000.....
