Is that flux core or are you using solid wire with gas?

Solid core with probably not enough gas and definitely not enough skill

Definitely looks like a shielding has issue. Your welds are coming out very porous in the picture. What kind of welder? Regardless, make sure that the feed to your MIG hose is really shoved in that hole so that the little valve that allows gas to flow through isn’t blocked. When I first started using my machine, I didnt push that in far enough and it was blocking the gas from coming through and I was getting the same results as your picture

    Is your polarity correct?

Great question! I didn’t think of that. Polarity could definitely be reversed

@Subway4X4 Make sure you are electrode positive when welding with solid wire and gas

I've been MIG welding 25 years. I've made the mistake 3 times. Its just something I don't think about.

Hobart MVP set up with 240v.

I’m starting to learn the little tricks that you describe. What hole and what little valve?

The 240 volt has nothing to do with Polarity. You need to check to see what bolt the ground cable and MIG gun are bolted to inside the welder.

With solid core wire, the MIG gun lead needs to be bolted to the positive bolt inside the welder.

You know the hole that your MIG gun lead plugs into where the wire feeds into the little spring and starts feeding into the hose of your gun? You have to make sure that that whole piece is shoved in nice and tight so that the gas isn’t blocked

Can you hear the gas coming out the nozzle when you pull the trigger? (don't aim the gun at your ear).

    Indoors.

That was my very first attempt at welding anything a few months back.

    This is my latest:

Never fails either the gun is pushed back into the drive rolls or sticking out far enough the gas leaks

I find being in the correct position under the truck my hood stays on just fine

I still nod my head even knowing the hood is down 30 plus years is a hard habit to break
