What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Gets me everywhere I want to go, as fast as I need to get there.

270,000 miles on the original timing belt, water pump, and valve covers... And still gets essentially the same gas milage it did 14 years ago when I bought it... I'm not complaining.

 

Most reliable engine I had for sure. Mine blew a head gasket at 290k. Thats when i Ls swapped it. But when i ran my 33x12.50x15 wheel. I didn't regear and the engine had no power to turn. But believe it or not. I sold the original trans with 290k miles for $300. Shows how much the vehicle and parts for it hold their value

 

Changed front and rear diff along with transfer case fluids (Mobil 1 75-90 Synthetic). Motor oil and filter. Greased the drive-train. Just need to order Redline MT-90 for the 5MT. Anyone happen to know where I could pick some up locally around Pittsburgh?

 

Don’t call the 3.4l a big slow turtle until you’ve driven the 2.7l Auto.

 

Try a 22r auto or a 3.slow auto

 

Usually I’m not big on black wheels, but the grey they offer kinda sucks. Sure wish they offered bronze...

 

lol I've always been amazed to this day seeing those little 1980s 22r/re Toyota trucks with 400k miles on them still hauling a ton of weight or pulling overloaded trailers. Definitely one hell of a little motor despite being way underpowered by today's standards

 

Truely a legendary engine. I’ve actually had one driven into the shop. With 2 cylinders having holes in the block. And the fucker drove it 10 miles to the shop

 

I drove mine without a main rear seal for a while. Who knows how long i drove it with no oil. Found of when i had driven 100 miles to go to prom in a different town and was so bored waiting for my date I check the oil...and there was none haha

My mom drove it 24miles with no fan belt..ie no water pump.

Amazing motors. very underpowered though but thats probably why they were so bullet proof.

 

So I'm finally going to swap out the lower spherical bearings on my Kings...been sitting on the new ones from Wheelers for a month now. The squeaking is gone but the clunking is getting awful and I don't want to damage the lower eyelets.

Is it possible to swap out the spherical bearings with the coilovers still mounted to the truck? Obviously I'd have to unbolt the bottom but I'm wondering if I can do it with the top still bolted in...could only find one video on Youtube and the guy did it by taking them off completely and pushing the old bearings out with a vice and some sockets...I don't have a workbench with a vise at home so I'm hoping someone has done it another way and can share their process.

 

Might be able to make it work with a good c clamp and some sockets.

However, for the effort it takes to remove the 3 bolts on the top, I think it would save a ton of effort being able to do that job on a bench.

 

yeah it seems easy to do that way but I don't have a workbench/vise at home, but this could be a good excuse to get one lol.

 

I used a press to change mine, but you could use a vice too.

I use my vice more than just about any tool in my garage. Super handy tool to have around.

 

That's how I feel about my impact driver, lol. Yeah I'll look into getting one, I'm sure it'll get a ton of use once it's set up.

Yup, back to normal. Last year when I got my tires they didn't offer the use twice deal. Only saved $100 on my current set of tires but still came out cheaper than anyone else.
