Well yes you can, but swapping out y pipes is not something I am willing to do every two years, because this truck is my daily driver after all and if the mods are not relatively simple to get to at this point I don't want it to be something to worry about prior to smog checks.

Catbacks are cool for smog checks, but y pipes with cats are a whole different ball game. There are specific cats which need to be in place if they are aftermarket. You know, California BS.

I'm pretty sure CA only allows factory oem cats still. There haven't been any manufacturers that have created and been approved for replacements........so to protect your cats, it would be best to swap in a catless y pipe and long tube headers.....it's the only solution.

That's what I'm telling my wife.

No sir. Factory OE cats, or specific cats with CARB approved PN's only are approved for emissions inspections in order to pass.

Cats with PN's not specific to vehicle make and model will be failed regardless if check engine light is on or not simply due to the PN being incorrect. If it is not a CARB cat, you can even more so forget about passing.

It doesn't surprise me actually so in summary I am double borked. Unless I had Roost weld on my factory cats in place on his equal length y pipe, then I could have the best of both worlds. Emissions pass ability year after year without having to screw with the truck every two years and equal length for maximum scavenging effect. :D

    Yes, we both are!

The Y pipe is an easy swap, if you make an adapter section for the JFR y pipe. The URD headers is what I'm worried about swapping out every two years. I installed the ARP studs, just to try and make it a little easier. The y pipe swap should only be a 15 min job, so totally doable.

I remember all the ridiculous regulations when I lived in SoCal for 6 years stationed at Camp Pendleton. I brought in from Michigan my 1989 Chevy S10 with a loaded out 350 smallblock v8, bored over .30, holly 750 double-pumper carb, full exhaust with no cats, the works, etc. I kept the truck plated in Michigan for obvious reasons, but I believe it was the base that still required that I still get an emissions test done even if I had no chance in hell at passing or meeting regulations. That test was a joke every time I pulled in there.

Unless you have a giant 50lb skid plate blocking the y pipe and t-case like I do.

The issue with me at this point is I am just tired of doing big-ish mods to my truck these days because I just want to be able to hop in my car and not worry about failing so mods for me have to be simple, mostly accessible, and mostly smog legal.

It's just where I am in life right now.

Yeah, the y-pipe itself is 10 minutes. Pulling the skid however I dont know.
The headers definitely wont be fun swapping every 2 years.

It's just one of those deals where if you live in this state it is extremely difficult to be a car enthusiast without some sort of legal hassle. They hold your registration hostage every 2 years if you don't meet their ridiculous criteria. Some of which is irrelevant because it doesn't change emissions outputs of the vehicle and in some cases could actually improve it, but if it's not putting money into their pocket books it's against the law. -_-

A google search for the part # 38274-04-A01 doesn't bring up much, but there are a few 38724s on Amazon that look to be the same as the magnuson. I'm guessing their supplier is Gates or ACDelco.

I'm going to go with Gates. The more I look at it the more it looks like a part that is produced by Gates. It's not a bad unit by no means, it just needs some fine tuning to make it stronger to be able to handle higher tension shorter belts produce.

Maybe it is the stop which it is striking which causes it to break because of less give the belt has which causes the tensioner to hang back closer to the stop than it normally does. The shave stop mod makes me glad I did it because I now feel more confident about it withstanding the test of time even more.
