i believe GoPros record as a single file until the memory card is full. Dashcams record in shorter increments (1, 3, 5 minutes). When your card is full, it overwrites the oldest file. GoPros also have batteries, which aren't great if you leave it in the truck in extreme heat or cold. Many dash cams run on capacitors that only hold enough power to save the last file and shut off, which is why they need to be powered.

Dash cams also typically have features built in that will capture from before a G-force incident (accident/hard brake etc) to x amount of time after. These files normally get locked until the user unlocks them to be over written. Many have GPS, clocks, motion sensors, gyroscopes, and night vision.

When the vehicle is off it will record bursts, like every 5 or 10 seconds I think, of still images. Motion would trigger full recording, Tilt change triggers full recording. Sound may trigger full record mode ETC.

Essentially right tool for the job. GoPros are great for your wheeling trip. But a good dash cam will write speed, time, date, and sometimes location on the image. This makes it a better tool for property and liability protection.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
On my last trip to traffic court (some years ago), I was ticketed by a rookie officer for a minor traffic violation and just plead guilty after having arranged for court supervision with the assistant prosecutor (doesn't go on your record). The judge pronounced her verdict and chastised me for endangering other motorists. I told her I was admitting to the offense, but that I never, ever put anyone else in danger and very briefly explained why. She said she would like to hear more, but without visual aids of any sort (like a white board and marker, at least), it would have been very difficult to explain. If I had a video, I could have just said "Here, look." and maybe saved $180 and half-day's vacation time.

I suspect the deer, but he took his truck (steel bumper and everything) on the way out.

The BlackVue has the Power Magic Pro available the provides parking power. Just trying to get mine wired in.

Used the camera this week to prove to one of our contractors that their driver blew a stop sign in a tractor-trailer combo on a busy rural highway. Driver denied it, but the dash com footage told the story. Apparently he's coming in later to apologize. Blackvue phone app worked perfectly, was able to edit out the music using iMovie on the phone.

So much for the "I'll get a steel bumper to protect the truck if I hit a deer" argument...

    Nasty!

That sucks, glad you're alright. The recent hard frost has them moving around pretty good here too. T'is the season. Well you at least got to put some venison in the freezer for your troubles.
Venison Swiss steaks cooked in a beef consume with chopped celery, sliced portabella mushrooms, stewed tomatoes and onions poured over garlic mashed potatoes. Yumm!:yay:
