    Great Memories Here ..
    .
    .
...^^^... I helped the main paperboy to collect the money that was due Saturday at noon at the newspaper office ... we collected from customers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Did that from age 10 until about 12. Rain, snow, hot or cold, I had to work ... and wanted to get out of the house from over protective grandparents. Then, I bought the paper route from him for $20.00 at age 12, when the main paperboy went to college. He had the route for 4 years before me.

My first work experience was a my own paper route and was the best start in my life ... that I could ever had. It taught me financial responsibility as I had to pay by bill every Saturday at noon (no matter what), had to learn how to ride the bus to downtown to the bank and newspaper office on Saturdays, learn how to keep away from dogs, learn people's actions and moves and how to deal with people and money in general.

I lived in the middle class working neighborhood and had about 140 customers Monday thru Saturday morning ... and about 120 Monday thru Saturday evenings ... and about 220 customers on Sunday Morning. All of the paper deliver route had to be walked with no bike because of the hilly terrain. The newspapers on Thursday morning's and Sunday's had to be spotted on the route (about 400 lbs of newspapers) and I did that with the family car and nobody ever caught me in 5 years of 'secret driving". Yes, I was driving at age 12, but only around the block twice a week. I was about 14 before I would sneak out and go to the all night drive-in for a hamburger and a milkshake before delivering the newspapers on Sunday morning. I taught myself to drive, didn't speed and never got caught in 5 years. At about age 15, I took the family car overnight and went on a trip 40 miles away to help a buddy with his car. About 90 miles round trip and rehooked the speedo and gassed it up and nobody ever knew. that was a bad night because I had 80 miles of Interstate driving in blinding fog. Never forgot it.

Won trips to Canada (4 day bus trips), Washington, DC and the Indy 500 on my paper route ... mostly for new subscriptions and magazine sales.

Had to get up at 0430 from age 12 to age 17 and I made about $25.00 + tips a week for about 30+ hours work a week (delivering newspaper and collecting the money to pay the bill).

Also, developed a good lawn cutting business in the summer from my newspaper customers ... may 10 lawns.

Put Hallmark Cards in my newspapers on Thanksgiving and Christmas and knew most of my customers by name and I made a lot in tips.

When I think back, I had more disposal income with NO responsibilities as a little kid than I do now :) ... LOL.

And my Newspaper Delivery Route ... allowed me to do all of this stuff ... what great memories ..

I'm have to go back and read every post when I have the time, but here's some of my old school. Black and white 12" TV, 8 track recorder to make party tapes, then moved up to a cassette recorder from Germany, a Dual, and first color TV. Last pic is a timer I made to turn the TV off at night, mom yelled at me daily, made from an oven timer. I still have the amp, turn table, and speakers from Radio Shack in 1973, plus the cassette recorder and TV timer.

    My first entertainment center 1973.

Here you'll also see a antenna rotor control box, and a Kodak 110 camera with battery flash, left and right of the timer.

What was worse was being the youngest of 3, my younger brother will attest to this. He was our remote.

Luckily our neighbor across the street and our best friends owned a mobil station so we did not ever have to worry.

I was the remote (youngest) so I usually laid in the floor in front it. I was also the antenna adjuster.

Funny, we had a friend that had a Mobile Station, we'd go there at 11pm after closing and get all we wanted, until he retired and sold the place later that year. He got me started working on my own cars, he was like another father.
