Got another appointment tomorrow evening for the 10k service on my ‘18 with a May build date (04A70). Requested a health check on the ECU when I was setting the appointment, they ran my VIN and said no updates *available She did put a note re-hashing what I told her re: the TSB not being worded correctly. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow when I talk to the service writer at check-in.

I would! There have been a few updates after your truck was built.
In my case July 2018 build, checked the calibration numbers and it appears I’m only one update back. Toyota has continually tweaked the ECM calibration, probably not enough according to popular opinion.
Your truck would really benefit from the update.

If you're not feeling it, then ignorance is bliss. Don't tempt fate, and all that.

I could tell you how to get the surge to happen, but I don't want to open Pandora's box, right?

Sorry. I'm not gonna ruin @doublethebass 's day. I posted about it early in this thread before I updated the ECU.

    Hi Folks,

Alright I've been reading through the 100+ posts on this thread for an hour now. Can somebody simply tell me which confirmed TSBs I should have done for the Manual transmission when I go get my service done tomorrow? My main issue is that the truck 'stumbles' or 'jumps' sometimes when I try to accelerate relatively fast - usually changing to second or sometimes 3rd gear. From what I gather, the TSB 0058 18 update should fix this issue and DOES work with the manual ECUs even though the description states it is for automatic transmissions. Is that correct?

I'm not sure if I am having the surge at idle issue (or haven't noticed) but maybe I should have the TSB 0125 done anyways?

Also, I saw that somebody on here was having issues with their clutch pedal 'catching' or 'clicking' slightly - I just started noticing that same issue at 15,000 miles. Obviously, I'm super pissed about this as the truck is brand new. Hopefully I will have success in getting that repaired, also.

Is there anything I'm missing here as far as my understanding goes with the ECU updates?

    Thanks for the help, ya'll!

I don't mean to split hairs, but 15k is not a brand new truck! :)

TSB-0058-18 and TSB-0125-18 are said to apply the same update. You didn't say what year yours is, but check this post:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/page-106#post-18883496

Depending on your dealer, the problem is not exactly what the problem is but convincing them that a TSB noted for ATs (TSB-0058-18) actually applies to your Taco and that it covers all affected model years. Similarly with TSB-0125-18, it is only noted for 2017 MTs, but applies to 2016 and 2018s also.

So, the best route is take copies of these to your dealer, discuss your problem, show them the ECU IDs in the tables of the TSB, and ask them to check for any ECU updates when they plug in TechStream.

The ECU IDs noted in the TSBs are specific to MT Tacos.

Awesome - thank you, tonered! My truck is a '17 M/T. I will print off the TSBs and take them with me in case I need to do some convincing. You are right a truck with 15,000 miles is not technically new but I guess it's the newest I've ever owned! All my daily driver vehicles have been manuals (Mustang, RX-7, GTI, Forester) and none of them ever had any kind of clutch/transmission issues until well after 100k miles so it seems alarming. I guess thats what warranties are for!

No problem. With your 2017, TSB-0125-18 should be all that you need to take with you since the ECU ID in the table on Page 3 is specifically for our Tacos (04B12 going to 04B13). It might be handy to take TSB-0058-18 with you just in case you need to dig deeper with the service writer, especially if you need to start talking about surging problems?

As weird as it sounds, this is only an engine control update. There is no computer control in our transmissions / clutches. With that though, the update helps smooth out shifting. So, there is nothing wrong with your clutch and transmission, just the way that the motor is responding while shifting.

Figured I'd update everyone - dealership did the tune for me today ('17 M/T). I'm not sure if it would have got done if I didn't print off the TSBs (0125-18 & 0058-18) and take them with me. At least three people from the service team had to ask me what I needed done and two of them tried to tell me the updates didn't apply to my truck (being a manual transmission). Highlighting the ECU numbers on the TSB sheets helped clarify this with them. They finally hooked up the stream and confirmed that there was an ECU update available.

After driving around town today, I don't think there is a drastic difference in any one thing but the truck does seem just a little more 'dialed in' in terms of power delivery when you get on the throttle - especially in the lower gears.

Thanks for the insight - glad I got it done!
