Ah...but I always carry noise canceling head phones...or ear plugs

My RTT can be very noisy on windy days, raging rivers and those darn pesky nieghbor kids

    Cheers

Its in the Middle of the Big Thicket Preserve about a hour SW of Rayburn. Hardwood bottoms between Village Creek and Kimble Creek. As much a state of mind as a place. Think "The Forks" of the Angelina and the Neches, up Bee Tree Slough. Kinda' like that. The land that time forgot.

Guys, check out the hammock forums. You'll never go back to sleeping in a tent or on the ground again. More comfortable than my memory foam mattress at home.

Last Bus to Wisdom by Ivan Doig. A really good read.

Let me know what you think of it. Doig is one of my favorite authors. Wisdom is the last book he wrote- died shortly after it was finished. If you like the book look the listing on the web site about others he has authored; I think I have most all of them and do reread them when I want to have his words roll around in my mind. This House of Sky (NF) is probably my favorite.

Trailhead between passage 2 and 3 of the AZ Trail. Truck just behind me. That's me trying to dry out and eat after 14.5 rain soaked miles on passage two. Unfortunately about 30 seconds after this i had to finish my dinner in the truck cause the rain came back.

Those tent platforms make me nervous... are they better than, say, a bed tent? The ground, perhaps?

    Nervous in what sense?
The tent is an amazing unit, well constructed and the mattress is supremely comfortable. It stands up well to high winds and rains with no issues.
Better is always subjective. I have improved comfort over a ground tent with ultimate mobility (I can go wherever my truck will take me). Drawbacks to a bed tent for me include having to empty the bed of the truck to set up my tent. I'm done with ground tents at this point. Drawback of the system, which goes for a bed tent. If I want to go anywhere, I have to pretty much break camp. If you're moving daily it works great, if you want to stop somewhere and explore an area for a few days it has limitations.

My comment was more tongue in cheek because I have a fear of heights. I honestly had never seen one of those before this past week (after I got my truck). But you interpretted exactly what I was wondering about... thanks for the detail.

That is my impression. So, I decided I do not want one. YMMV.
One other point, the RTTs are more expensive.

Take a used plastic apple sauce or mayo container into the tent with you. At 2am when you gotta pee, just kneel and hold the large opening over you unit and go. A small led light set on the floor of the tent near the container makes it easy to see where you are shooting. Screw the lid back on, set it aside and go back to sleep. If there is a girl on board, get them a She-Wee and have her do the same thing. Later you can dump your little secret in the woods, or into a toilet if camping in a campground. Rinse, and repeat.

Been doing this for years while camping to point it's a no brainer for me.

On those chilly nights you can snuggle up to the bottle when you're done!

Cool, man. I did that hike with my daughter in the 80s. She wanted me to carry her back up! She was 11.
