Help me select tires...

i should have this response in a document that i can cut and paste.

When i hear no off roading and ice traction, this is the tire. The few AT tires ive had havent been too good on ice. In the winter, most traction that is needed is ice/slushy roads. If you drive unplowed or neglected roads that dont get plowed right away, maybe at's can help.

These tire threads are funny sometimes. OP says he never offroads. People reccomend chunky, heavy and loud offroad tires!

 

Of all the tires you mentioned OP I’d go with the Cooper AT3s. .

Right guys! I ran Hankook ATM RF10s (P265/75R16's) for 40k miles, and they were always alright, WAY better than stock but definietly no where near the road manners and light snow and ice traction as the Micheline Defender LTX M/S (aka Micheline MS2). So when i had a blowout on the Hankook's (which left a bad taste in my mouth for those tires) i went to a Cooper AT3 (the non 4s as it wasnt out yet) in a LT265/75R16 load range C. Been a good tire but even in a load range C they are heavy (46 or 47 lbs a tire) and the MPG hit has been noticeable as has the acceleration and braking, they are also getting rather loud and i only have like 15k on them.

Granted i love the more aggressive look of an AT tire, and i do actually go off road in my truck, but 95% of my driving is on the highway or in snowy icy roads to go skiing next set o tire will be the Defender LTX M/S in a 265/75R16 (non LT). I have the dirtbike if i wanna do gnarly off roading.

Think long and hard about AT tires... they're louder, they give you less MPG, and being heavier they make your truck feel sluggish. 99.9% of my driving is on good old pavement, and man do I regret not getting good on-road tires like the aforementioned Michelins.

 

My Cooper AT3 4s are outstanding highway, wet, mud, gravel tires. Only tire I'll put on my Tacoma from here on out. Handle sporty and smooth, but if you do ever find yourself in anything messy they hold up really well and while I haven't had a snow to test them in yet, they carry the snowflake rating for winter tires..

Edit: Per some earlier comments... these tires are quieter than the stock tires and ride extremely smooth. They are also lighter than a lot of AT tires coming it at around 42 lbs and I've seen zero impact on my MPGs after swapping my stock wranglers for these. They are also very inexpensive

 

Agreed. I have the older AT3's on my 4th gen 4runner. They replaced a set of Michelin LTX's. These ride so much smoother, less bouncy and handle great everywhere. Perfect for a family vehicle or a weekend light off-roader.

We just started carrying the Falken line at work and I'm still spending a lot of time ogling non manufacturer-supplied images of them on vehicles to see how they look real-world.

Goodyear Wrangler Ultra Terrain. They're what we call a 'Club Tire' in that Goodyear produces them for a budget price for certain vendors. In the case of the Ultra Terrain, I believe they're only sold at Discount Tire

 

You got my attention. I need tires probably the next few months or so. It's between the Cooper AT3 4S and the Michelin LTX M/S2. The AT3's seem so new that there arent any reviews on tire rack. Where as the Michelin has millions of proven miles. I like the look of the coops better, and they seem to be a better value. Hmmm.

 

the Michelin's will last probably 20k mi longer than the AT3's so considering that into the pricing.

I wont care what pricing is, the Micheline Defender LTX will be my next tire no questions asked, im done with loud, heavy, at tires that kill my mpgs all for the "look".... the added traction off road RARELY gets used by me and 4x4 + locker + atrac makes a good job of most situations if REALLY necessary.

 

Do you have the DEFENDER LTX M/S or LTX M/S2. These are two different tires right?


The Defenders are ~$200 a tire and LTX m/s2 are ~240 a tire. 20% difference in cost between the two and quick compare of the UTQG shows that the defenders have a higher rating. Not sure why the other is more expensive.

 

found out they are called goodyear wrangler ultra terrain at. Pretty nice, however they look more aggressive on the picture above than they really are...

 

Quite sure the defenders replaced the ms2. If you are finding them i would guess older stock. Ive had both, same tire

 

zero offroading, easy go with Michelins. ride like a dream plus they make the best road tires in the game.

It's tough to beat Michelins when the vast majority of your driving is on pavement. They are expensive but last forever. My last set of LTX AT2 had over 70K on them and still had over .3" tread remaining. They were so old that the sidewalls were cracking so I replaced them- with the same thing.

 

Yeah going for the Michelin. Have them on my wifes Pilot. Been impressed so far. For a few extra bucks, seems like an easy decision. Thanks all

 

i believe they stopped making them and have replaced them with the General Grabber ATx. which is the same/improved version
