    Hello TacomaWorld!!

Many of y’all know me. But for those whom don’t. My name is Keith Carty. I build BAmufflers and run DirtyDeedsIndustries. My companies and I are very well known in the tundraworld. This reputation is earned;)

Given our reputation I’ve been approached by a few members of the Tacoma community to help fill a need. This very same need was not properly met in the tundra community when I was approached by them 15+ years ago.

I’ve taken a bit of time to study the 3.5L. My thoughts on this awesome turbo engine are that there is a lot of performance left on the table!! And yes, I said it, it’s a TURBO engine!!! But there is no turbos:(

I suspect Toyota is testing these engines for durability and the Tacoma platform was the place to do it. And my Toyota insider info (a few years ago) indicated that the 3.5 twin turbo would be the next tundra engine.

High compression ratio, direct injection (for low rpm cruising) secondary injection for heavy load under boost, and so many more features make this engine have huge (untapped as of now) potential!!

I know my friend Matt at @OVTune is nearly done with his twin turbo kit. And believe me, when he is done we have the dual exhaust that is a perfect compliment to a twin turbo beast.

But what about the rest of us? We have this bitchen platform with all this potential, but maybe a twin turbo kit isn’t in the cards right now. But we want to optimize what we have. What the heck do we do?

In my hands on research I’ve discovered the Tacoma 3.5 to be much the same as all other modern Toyota SUV’s. The main point to make is in the exhaust system. Given our variable valve timing, the exhaust system is critical to performance. And one of my biggest observations is that it’s easier to screw it up than it is to make it better.

The 3.5 Tacoma is a little different though. Most other modern Toyota suv’s Have only one thing wrong with the exhaust system. Typically the muffler is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system (not counting the exhaust manifolds) In other words, take the tundra for example. If a guy had no plans to install long tube headers, and asked what should I do on the exhaust. My answer is to simply replace only the muffler. After the manifolds the muffler is the restriction. Nothing else.

But the tundra exhaust pipe size dimensions are very oddball. So changing ‘just the muffler’ isn’t as simple as that. You need the pipe size correct. A correct y pipe. Correctly built mufflers (that’s right I said mufflers. Even though it’s a single exhaust we use two mufflers). And we even build a device called a helmholtz resonator to kill drone.

The above package allows you to simply unbolt your muffler, install a system that is engineered just for you. Install a helmholtz resonator to kill drone. And all of this is done in your driveway using simple hand tools;) Do a yourube search for BAmufflers 8”. And check out https://www.tundratalk.net/forums/t...ems-video-q-thread.html#/topics/547018?page=5

Our goal with the 3.5L Tacoma is much the same as we’ve been able to provide for the 5.7 Tundra. Ease of installation. POWER gained over stock!! And perhaps what we are most famous for, all of the above with NO DRONE.

In our quest to accomplish these goals we’ve worked closely with @KTJO 4x4 and spent a week developing the perfect DUAL exhaust for 3.5P Tacoma!! https://youtu.be/UnSWOGv1Pas

After a lot of work. And about 30 design/engineering improvements/changes I came to the conclusion that dual exhaust isn’t good for a non turbo 3.5:( I had that hypothesis going into the project. And upon completion the findings were conclusive. So my official recommendation, as bad as it sucks, is that single exhaust is where we will wanna be. Duals loses massive low end torque.

I only broke the ice on KJ’s truck with single exhaust. So..... we have a little work to do:)

That said, I (we) are up to the challenge!! We have another 3.5 coming for a week, second week of November. During this time we will address 3 of the 4 flaws inherited by us, from Toyota:

    1. Restrictive exhaust manifolds. Unfortunately this cannot be resolved as the head and exhaust manifold are one in the same.
    2. Crush pipe under transfer case. This is horrific!! And we can pretty easily resolve this issue
    3. Unequal length banks of exhaust. This is also pretty easily resolved.
    4. Restrictive muffler. Also easily resolved.

Three of the four issues ALREADY resolved. The last part of the puzzle is doing all of the above without drone. Hence the test truck coming in second week of November.

It should only take a week to finish development. Which is perfect timing as we intend to run a Black Friday sale with a deep discount!!

Our system will include equal length mid pipes. Equal length catback. And some type of tailpipe, either factory or our custom built design.

We will have more details end of the second week of November with final pricing.

Please subscribe to this thread and we will post a link to the group buy here. We will also update progress of our systems for the 3.5

Interested to see how this progresses! I added a Borla Muffler to my 2017 and haven't made up my mind on the "noise" yet.

Now you got me all excited for a new exhaust... I know I need one since my flow master is already rusty

We're all for improving the performance shortcomings of this engine. Keep up the good work and updates, especially if you have a deal on a new exhaust.

Toyota already has a 3.5 twin turbo in use. I had the opportunity to drive an LS. Tons of bottom end grunt!

    416 hp
    442 lbs.ft of torque at 1600 rpm

i've been doing lots of my own custom exhaust work over here, and i replaced my muffler last, after removing rear cats, the crush piping, and adding a Y pipe. things seriously opened up after i replaced the TRD muffler. that pig was the main restrictor in the whole system. even after removing the rear cats i didn't get improvement like after replacing the stock muffler. that thing has got to go!

I'm down for an exhaust that's not loud, doesn't resonate, and makes a lot more power.

Keep the updates rolling! I'm not in the market money wise for a turbo solution for at least the next year or 2 but as an OVTune customer I can only see this being a logical progression that won't break the bank nearly as bad! ...and if you can achieve this without pissing my wife off with an annoying drone, you'll be a hero!

Sad thing is the only similarities between these engines stop at the displacement. The Lexus has a longer stroke but smaller bore than the Tacoma. (According to the 3.5L resident tuner OVTune)

I was not aware of that. At one time it was only the stroke that differed between the 1GR, 2GR and 3GR engines. The bore was the same. Perhaps that's changed.
