It certainly meets the requirements for frame failure, but it’s past the 15 year in service date. Only 2003/2004 trucks still qualify.

The confusion could have been easily avoided if the dealer just said that. Either he missed that part of their explanation, our dealer is dumb and just said "it doesn't meet the requirements" without explaining WHAT requirements it doesn't meet.

The unfortunate part is how the owner let it go this far, and only NOW he's like "hey maybe I should do something about it." Guaranteed he's been driving it like that for a while now...

Holy crap what is it with college kids and putting fart cans on their moms hand me down Altima/civic/etc? It sounds like a bunch of weedeaters. Not to mention the diesel rednecks doing the same thing to their trucks.

I'm not actually sure if this is broken, or intentional...

So I'm coming up on 200k. So by the time it hits, I will have replaced the carrier bearing, radiator, thermostat, and fan clutch. We got the truck at 180k, but no idea about PO maintenance. Minus the engine coolant doing a full fluid flush. Replacing transmission filter and adding in-line filter. Doing plugs/wires. Replacing fuel filter. Cleaning power steering reservoir filter and adding in-line filter. The main belt looks fresh (and has non-Toyota markings), so was thinking of skipping that for now. Brakes are fine for now, might make a weekend of it the near(ish) future just to know i'm starting fresh and maybe do the Tundra upgrade. Thinking about paying for the gasket seals to be done, it needs it and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that one. Anything else I'm missing for a 200k/15year maintenance overhaul/refresh?

Why do you need an additional in-line transmission filter?

Just to compare, my 5-lug v6 was neglected for its entire life and I saved it from the scrapyard. Absolutely nothing is wrong with it whatsoever. These are solid trucks.

I like the idea of a replaceable magnetic in-line filter (something I can replace somewhat frequently without cracking the transmission pan open) to supplement the wire mesh filter that is there already.

But you are right in that I certainly don't need it, just something that adds a small piece of mind.

I understand it’s an auto trans, if it was a manual trans it wouldn’t have transmission fluid.

A transmission cooler would help, yes, but is an additional filter really necessary?
