What were the symptoms that warranted the need to replace the prop shaft?

They are looking at a few things; vibration on propeller shaft, squeaky sound and/or vibration on the u-joints spiders and center support bearing, especially during acceleration under load.

If the propeller shaft is not damaged, they will replace only the u-joint spider assemblies and center support bearing. They will only replace the whole prop shaft only if the shaft is damaged due to the vibration.

My only concern is although Toyota is replacing the parts, Toyota is using the exact same parts without any new revision. That pretty much means we are going to face the exact same problem in the future.

Frame rust warranty extension program is currently only 2005-2010 trucks.

Alright well that makes me feel better because when I've looked at it I don't see any rust. Thankfully mine must have been after they stopped dicking around with the coatings.

Holy smokes, just saw this for the first time

I just lifted mine and started noticing that same vibration (albeit not as bad). Would replacing the carrier bearing help with this?

Not to put sand in your pants, but I wouldn't count on it too much.
At this point, considering Toyota's 15 year-running-strong track record (1995-2010) of frames rusting completely through, sometimes within 5 years of new, I've concluded they are clueless.
I suppose I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that the 1st gen frame rust issue really caught on, oh wow - that's convenient, right around ~2008-2009. So Toyota was still making the same mistake on the 2nd gen frames until, I guess 2009, then they were like "oh crap" and changed things up, which is why the warranty stops at 2010 trucks, but...I'm still skeptical.

Marginally. The carrier bearing will just control the movement a bit better. The real solution is to fix the drive shaft trying to move around like that by either angles/balancing/or double cardan joint.

I see what you're saying, but at the same time I've looked undermine a good bit before and I really don't see any rust at all.

I mean look I agree with you it's almost 2020, rusting frames should be some product of a bygone era.

I've been watching this thread for a couple weeks. I developed a nasty vibration/shudder around 30-40mph and then again pretty constant around 60mph. Apparently my trucks VIN does not fall within the warranty enhancement and never received the letter. None the less $560 later and a new rear u joint and the vibration is gone.

But I'm pretty sure it's just going to keep coming back because the angles are not really what supported by the U-joints. Everything I've read on here and different sites talking about the physics and design of drive shafts basically points me to believe that the only true permanent fix will be a double cardan after the center carrier bearing with the rear axle angled to point directly at it.

I'm also pretty sure that I've read other threads on here where people have swapped them out and have them break down again over time. It really is a design flaw and I wish that Toyota would acknowledge it as such

Seems like my u-joints went earlier than most. Certainly earlier than the letter!

2007 DCLB, 205k , all stock (except for 5100s all around).

Got the letter earlier this year but just now got all the documentation together and submitted for a reimbursement. Getting a cc statement from 2011 for an account I no longer have proved to be challenging.

I had the U-joints replaced at 107k in 2011. Center bearing at 159k in 2015. Not expecting to get reimbursed for the center bearing but worth a shot! Will post results here.

After reading through this thread, now I am going to be looking for frame rust/replacement info (not that likely in North Texas). Leafs replaced a by Toyota a couple of years ago.

For the past few times I have backed out of my garage I have noticed a squeaking from underneath my truck, and it sounds like it’s coming from the driveshaft area. The squeaking starts and stops with the rotation of the driveshaft. Would this be covered under the extended warranty? My truck is a 2007 with 106K miles on it.

You should have gotten a letter from Toyota in the mail.

Dealer called me today and said my truck was ready, they replaced all three u-joints. I never had any vibrations, just a squeak when reversing. I sure hated to turn that 2018 Camry XSE loaner back in, that thing drove like a dream.

I'm in the middle of trying to have my u-joints replaced by the dealer. They are saying they can't do them without charging me because they had been replaced before with aftermarket. That's not completely true. I have the bill from a repair shop that replaced only one u-joint and the carrier bearing. The dealership had me call the 1-800 number and see what they say. They told me the dealer should replace all but the one that was replaced before free of charge and that I can also submit the proper paperwork to be reimbursed for the first u-joint I had replaced before the extended warranty was issued. However, the dealer won't acknowledge that only one was changed before, and states they won't do the repair without customer pay. I asked them how they can tell which is aftermarket, he states that they are very similar but made of different material. Hard to visually inspect a dirty lubed part and guess it's material composition in my opinion...
