I do that too, in my wife’s car (‘18 Forester). It’s the first 6sp car we have owned. I asked her if she drives it that way on the highway, and she said “I don’t remember, I never get the chance to go fast enough on the highway”. I forgot her commute is rush hour both ways, lol. Then I felt sorry for her.

I can’t wait to get my manual Tacoma.

    Hi guys! I have a 2018 DBLCB TRD Sport 4x4 MT. What's everybody's typical rpm for 60mph?

Mine does just fine. Its no S2000 or 350z but it works just fine. Up hill, down hills, towing, off road no problems.

    Welcome...

Depends on tire size. For example, the following tire would be spinning much faster than my stock tire

Gotcha. I used to have an AT 2017 and 60mph was around 1500rpm. Just wanted to make sure that 2k rpm for 60 mph is normal. thank you!

The Manual has 4.30 rear gears so it will rev slightly higher.

Drove a Manual, and I loved it, reminded me of driving my Audi, though it was around town with a top speed around 60 by the dealer (rt35)

I'm 5'9, only issue I had was getting use to the rear drums

The brakes function fine, the Tacoma stops shorter than the Colorado with rear discs.

Oh, I believe that, just the first time I've noticed them really since I never drove anything with drums before (not counting the test drive with the 2nd gen, which I'm not sure how I didn't notice)

i used to daily a '70 A body before rebuilding it from scratch. that thing had 4 drums, old and crusty. every time you'd hit the brake on an even slightly damp road for sure at least one corner would lock up even on light pressure. and i lived in Seattle where the roads are never dry, so it was a total nightmare.

that's the deal with drums. they grab like nobody's business, but modulation and anything less than off & on is difficult for drums. they are strong in my Tacoma but the modulation required with my driving style is braking like i'm in a dump truck. if drums don't get enough pressure they don't engage. enough pressure and they over grab. still as far as drums go these are the most predictable i've driven. where's @stevotivo12 when i need to feel bad about my drum brakes? i'll take his brakes if he ever gets sick of them. ;)

    Some tips for you:

    1) the truck lurching in 1st is normal and harmless. What happens is that there is still a little bit of torque in the input shaft still spinning when you shift to 1st quickly after clutching. You can test by switching to neutral, clutch out them clutch in and shift to 1st quickly.

If it were the clutch dragging You will know very easily from the grinding or notchy shifts. Or you'll find 1st gear not indexing properly and grinding your synchros that way. You will even feel the shifter resist to come out of gear easily. I had this issue on my 3rd gen from an overtorqued pressure plate from the factory. Fixed under warranty

2a) Not too sure what you mean by chunky 2-3 shifts. If you mean notchy/grinding then you can try this:

When you are ready to shift make sure you clutch in and then shift to the next gear quickly. Don't let your RPMs fall more than 2-300rpms. Your synchros will have to spin less to match the input/output shaft for the next gear. Don't power shift, just quickly and with finesse make then next gear shift.

Also make sure you are pressing the clutch pedal atleast 3/4 quarters to be sure you are getting proper disengagement of the cluth to be safe.

2b) if you are referring to your engine kind of surging/lugging then try to get higher RPMs and/or don't press too hard on the accelerator. If you increase pedal pressure gradually you can avoid the surging. Also this engine needs higher RPMs to make power. I like to shift at atleast 2500rpms to accelerate smoothly and in a relaxed manner.

    3) this is an important step for smooth shifting. This engine like many other modern engines has rev hang. You'll notice your RPMs falling very slowly when you clutch in too quickly to make your shift. This will cause you to lose speed/momentum while waiting for the RPMs to fall, and you'll get a rough shift if you engage the clutch too soon at the wrong rpm. To avoid this you have to wait 1-2 seconds before clutching to make your next shift. Also if you are doing 1st > 2nd gear you also have to rev to atleast 2500rpms to avoid rev hang in 1st gear.

You can test this in these ways:

If in 1st gear accelerate and clutch in at 2000rpms= you'll get rev hang no matter what

Next in 1st gear accelerate to 2500rpms or higher and wait 1-2 seconds then clutch in= your revs will drop faster

If in any other gear you can avoid rev hang at any rpm by just waiting 1-2 seconds. You can physically hear the engine cut fuel after waiting a brief period after you take your foot of the accelerator.

Well now that I've got some perspective on it, that'll help once I drive it again

I used to shift this way too but I figured the clutch might not be fully disengaging and causing more wear. It really did shift nicely that way though.

I highly recommend that you DO NOT press half way on the clutch. If I remember correctly a while back my shifter would not come out of 1st gear with my foot all the way to the floor on the clutch pedal. I yanked on the shifter and heard it grind. Plus the hydraulic accumulator slows down the action of the clutch engaging/disengaging so it's possible your clutch may still be dragging if you only press half way.

With mine its a matter of getting good with rev matching between shifts.
And this lil puppy likes higher rpms than im used to.
But when you get it right, its like butter!

Other than needing to carefully ease the shifter into second for the first 1500 or so miles to avoid a crunchy feeling and needing to be careful for the first 2 or 3000 miles shifting into 5th and 6th to avoid a clunk I have not had a lot of issues. Yes, the rev hang and engine/throttle characteristics required learning the quirks of the vehicle to be smooth, but at 6k miles it feels as good as any manual I've owned. It will idle along in 1st or 2nd gear in traffic, I have no issue accelerating smoothly from those speeds. I get no clunk shifting into 5th or 6th. I don't get bucking unless I'm clumsy with the throttle and clutch. Maybe I got lucky? Maybe I've just adjusted my driving style to the vehicle? I don't know, but mine drives fine for me.

For anybody with less than 2500 miles give it some time to break in and get to used to the quirks of the vehicle, I think you'll be a lot happier at that point.

When I'm coasting, that is, released the accelerator, but still in a gear I get a whining noise, but when I press the clutch it stops. When I release it it comes back. Is this just normal transmission whine?
