I think whatever the answer is, it is not an easy issue. We still don’t have an aftermarket turbo option for this engine available. I know one is being worked, but it seems there are some struggles. I suspect the tranny issue is not as easy as it would seem at first blush either.

Can anybody explain why these trucks get into 5th gear at 35mph if you simply lift your foot off pedal ever so slightly while in 4th? Technically why, I might add. Also, anybody still driving their first Gen along with owning the 3rd Gen? It's just unbelievable how nice the First Gen goes through the gears and how good that pedal feels. Still don't wanna go back, 3rd Gen rides too cush.

So this is interesting. Yesterday, on all drives (maybe 6 short trips), I drove like a bat outta hell to see if short term learning occurred and would change shift feel. I didn't reach any conclusions. But...

In 2500 miles since I've had the truck, I've NEVER seen "trip average" mpg above 20mpg. It's always around 18mpg. Every single time I drive.

But today, when I went back to my normal driving style, I was above 20mpg on every drive (4 short trips).

I can only conclude that SOMETHIMG changed. And apparently for the better. Why this is, I have no idea.

One thing that is weird, but definetely true: If you putter along and try to get to say 45 as economically as possible, you get worse mileage than if you get to 45 as soon as possible then maintain 45. The truck will just keep trying to accelerate and run a lower gear using more gas. That might be some of what you experienced.

Eh, rereading your post, maybe not. I must have blacked out on the part where you said you went back to driving normally. Unless you normally act like Big Daddy Dan Garlits at a stop light, i'm probably wrong.

Yep that was the weird thing. Today when I went back to normal was when I was seeing the gas mileages I'd never seen before. So will they stay up there? Don't know yet.

This is the exact reason my wife drives it. It feels like it's a race for 6th gear, all the time. I drive it with ECT/POWER on whenever I do, to lessen the amount of hunting it does. Stupid thing is constantly looking for another gear and it drives me nuts. Now I sleep while she drives. Problem solved.

Oh really, so you are saying that I can get a surge and a stumble at the same time? That really cracks me up. So can they counter act each other or would it look like a bucking bronco? That is almost as funny as your octane suggestion. Never heard of octane fixing a transmission problem. Maybe I should have just used Seafoam instead? Just admit you were wrong or go away quietly.

If you do a search in this forum you will find several threads relating to the stumble/"misfire" under light acceleration or low load issue, that is unrelated to any surging. Not sure why you are reluctant to believe this is a real occurrence. And since using high octane fuel remedies the problem for most its hard to assume it's related to the transmission. Why all of this is difficult for you to accept I do not know.

    Here's my TSB-0062-18 update story for y'all:

Had my 15K check up last Friday & when I dropped it off I told the service advisor I spend a ton of time up at the lake / driving steep roads & have read up on this software update & want it done. The kid had no clue what I was talking about & I had to go to work so I asked him to call me after he spoke to his manager about it. He called me back & clearly had been instructed to tell me they won't which I pushed back on. He finally caved & said they can request a technician take my truck for a drive because they "can only do the update if they have actual evidence of symptoms." I agreed to this since it was my only option.

When I picked up my truck he explained the tech couldn't replicate the issue (which was no surprise) but instead they gave me the software update TSB-0125-18 that's supposedly similar but not identical. He was not knowledgeable enough to explain the difference between the updates. The whole experience was 100% on-brand for this dealership: they didn't do what I asked & couldn't explain why they took the action they did. If you're planning on getting the update done, I wish you better luck than I had.

Does anyone know anything about TSB-0125-18?

I understand what you’re saying, but in many (or some) casses a surge will follow directly after a stumble, so it is often misdiagnosed. Obviously it does depends on what caused the stumble, as to if it has a surge directly after.
