First, I think its funny how quick we American's are so quick to judge and criticize another culture for their beliefs and traditions. Once you get out of the country, you'll find how much of the world looks down on us.

Second, I don't agree with whaling and appreciate the ocean as much as anyone else. Hell, I've currently spent half of my time on the ocean either fishing or diving! And granted, I do keep a lot of the fish and lobster I find, but that's a little different than an endangered animal. For instance, you won't find me keeping or shooting Red Snapper out here (currently a ban because they were overfished).

I can't stand that show, I can't watch it for 5 minutes without wanting to punch one of them in face. The arrogance of those assholes is amazing. The left wing hippies that think that when they break the law it's ok but when someone that disagrees with them does it's an outrage. It's whats wrong with this country in a nutshell.

from waht i could tell from the article, the meat is rarely used anymore. it was apparently cheap meat used after WWII but the majority of the country has never eaten it, and from what i can tell, its not good. from what i gathered from the article, its not so much of a need to continue whaling, as it is a "fuck you" to the western societies. ahte article mentions it being a rebellion against the high handedness of the western societies. so its like when you're a kid and your done playing with the ball. but you can tell that some little jackass wants it when you're done so you play with it anyway just so he cant have it. thats what it sounds like is going on over there. they dont need it as an industry anymore but they just dont want to be told by us they cant do it. which to be honest, kinda makes sense to me.

i like watching that show whenever i catch it on. Im down for the Japanese. I think the crew of the irwin are a bunch of drama-starved babys who dont have enuf chains to strap themselves to trees. n too stoopid that no one brought booze on the ship.

from what i read its not a delicacy. it was source of cheap meat to be served in schools after WWII. the article states most younger japanese folks have never had it, and the middle aged to older folks all say it tastes like shit. it apparently reminds them of hte "whale nuggets" they had to eat in school

Interesting concept- You mean a human life (like the 100's he endangers with his antics) is worth more than a whales??

(Sarcasm :D's in effect- See my above post about how much I loathe these Douche rockets)

If you check their site, their "campaigns" only last about 30 days....leaves plenty of time for the Japanese to continue their hunt. Also, who in their right mind would take a vessel into known navigation hazards (Ice) or ram into another vessel. (sea going vessels are tough, but not that tough) I'd like to see their captain have his liscense revoked for poor seamanship.

i'm pretty sure they have no chance of stopping a whaling ship unless they resort to actual piracy. how many times have they actually saved the whale thats being hunted? (i'm actually asking, i dont watch the show)

One of the best snippets I've seen was the whaling ship dragging a whale up the stern ramp right in front of them- They are all running around all upset about it...so they aren't very good at actually stopping them....slowing them down a bit maybe.

i can understand them being upset. i hate the way they just run down and exhaust these animals then spear them repeatedly. it sucks, but they aren't breaking any laws. they are following the laws of their country, so who are these hippie assholes to say they have to stop? they are actively trying to stop these guys from earning a living and providing for their families. i cant believe the japanese government hasn't come up with a way to stop them, or the US government cant declare them piarates or something.

I don't believe any of the ships are registered in the US so we really have no stake in it.

I want to know who gave these enviro-nut-jobs the authority to attack another vessel. If I was on the whaling ship and obeying international laws and was attacked, I would shoot back as though they were pirates. And I would shoot to kill. Period!

I hate this show because it makes heroes out of the PETA type whack-jobs out there.

The battles should be fought in the courts or by sanctions. Chances are the ones endangered on the fishing ships are just employees and not the corporate owners and decision makers.

    (Everyone's entitled to my opinion.)

I like watching the show but those guys on the Steve Irwin are idiots and have no respect for human life. They are ruining the the Spirit of Steve's name by doing every thing illegally when that man spent his life helping his cause with raising awareness of animals but never with ecoterrorism. I believe that killing 900 minke and 50 of the other whale a year is outrageous and cannot be justified for the name of scientific research. These sailors would be better off spending more time persuading other governments to pressure Japan to lower the amount of whales they are allowed to harvest. Going out and being violent and a pain to the whalers does not help the cause because other countries will never support them.

    Just my .02 cents
