Yes, It’s just slag barely holding it there. Bigger is better. It’s better to have to much than to little when it comes to machinery. JMO

 

Ah. Well I’m operating with a limited compressor at the moment. The 30xp is all it can really handle and I never foresee myself cutting anything more than 3/4 inch steel at most. I’ve got a saw for thicker stuff I might encounter.

 

You will love that 30xp, I have used many types of hypertherm machines over the years. In my experience there is only one name in plasma. It is an extremely well built machine and there is a guy on YouTube that has done a rough cut on 3/4 plate as well. I'm very happy with mine and once you consider how many tools it replaces its cheaper in the long run. No blades no gas bottle, plug it in and clean cuts.

 

That's good to hear. I think I'll be placing my order in the next week or so. I've got a job coming up requiring me to cut some 3/16 plate. Be a great excuse to buy it.

 

Something I also got to thinking about... tube notching with a plasma cutter. How easy is that to do without the whole CNC setup or is it more effective to just use a tube notcher equipped with a good hole saw? Thanks in advance.

 

Waaaay easier to use tube notcher with hole saw. Literally little to no clean up on the tube whatsoever and it’ll cope right onto the next piece of tubing perfectly.

I have a plasma and have tried to cut a notch in it and it doesn’t work that great

 

That answers my question. Now I won't waste my time. Haha. What tube notcher do you use? I've been eyeing the JD2 TN-100.

Can you only use Eastwood's hole saws on those? I've already got a collection of Milwaukee hole saws, be nice to use those instead of needing a new set.

Naw, you can use whatever hole saws. Just gotta be bimetal obviously. I use the Lenox brand ones from Lowe’s and they’re awesome

A little trick I learned a long time ago, put a nut on a machine screw, tack 2 places, remove screw. Perfectly centered threaded hole. This is probably a common trick but I'll put it out there anyway.

 

Took ya'lls advice and bought the Hypertherm Powermax 30xp last night. I'm excited for it to get here so I can see how much I've been missing out on.

Sit down and read the users manual if there are things you don`t understand ask.

I hate to see anyone spend $$$$ to tell them That is normal for what you have

Case in point The Miller Maxstar 150 is nothing like the New Miller Maxstar 161 not reading the users manual is not a warranty problem

The 161 has a users menu that you need to enable the tig function at least 10 machines " My Tig does not work"

 

Funny you said that, I was going to try notching some tubes the other day with the plasma cutter.

 

Next project, to fabricate light tabs/brackets to relocate those lights next to the license plate.
